Webstore Update / August 22, 2014

Greetings ladies and gents! Summer is almost over and I've been keeping pretty quiet on the label front as of late, but things are about to pick up pretty soon as we head into Fall. A couple of quick label updates, then we'll get to the webstore update …

On the release front, we'll have three new releases heading your way next month - the BREAKOUT"True Crime" 7", TENEMENT"Bruised Music Vol. 1" Singles Collection LP, and the ASYLUM 7" (on Vinyl Conflict) have all been pressed up and most of the covers are on order.  We will most likely see the two singles out around early/mid September and the Tenement LP towards the end of the month so stay tuned.

In other exciting label news, GMHQ is actually MOVING again! Yup, this will be the second time moving the full label operation this year!  As odd as it sounds, I'm actually pretty excited to be moving again so soon because I am finally getting everything OUT of my house and into a space solely for the label! I've been operating this record label and distro out of various houses and apartments over the past 12 years, so it's been a long time coming.  I'm currently crammed in an approximately 200 square foot extra bedroom in my apartment with record shelves floor to ceiling, and cannot WAIT to get into a much bigger space.

The move will hopefully only put a hold on shipping for two or three days next week, but any orders placed over the weekend will be ship out on Monday before the move. Needless to say, I'm very excited - so excited that I'm doing a 20% off discount code for any Grave Mistake Releases (including package deals). Once again, another month has passed since the last webstore update, and some killer records have been added to the store over that time. Sadly, a couple new releases came and went before I could get this update out (like the new HANK WOOD and LONG KNIFE records), but I'm working on getting restocks soon. I also have a few more new titles that are en route, but sadly didn't make it in time for this update (like the new GLUE 7", STEP FORWARD 7", and LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS restocks).  However, once those show up they are going up in the store right away - so if you are looking to grab em ASAP, keep an eye on the new arrivals section of the store or the GM Facebook page. Anyways, there is still a ton of great stuff in stock …

Picked up the long awaited new 12" from Cleveland's one and only INMATES; some new stuff from our friends from Katorga Works, including the new INSTITUTE 7" and IVY LP (GM be one of only a handful of distros selling copies until the regular version is ready); a few choice slabs from Video Disease like the rad LP from THE FLEX and 7"s from STERILIZED and IRON YOUTH; picked up a couple of great new releases (and two of my favorites for 2014) from the wonderful city of Baltimore, MD - the ANGEL DU$T "A.D." LP and the WILD HONEY "Seventeen Forever" 7" - I was also able to grab some of the last remaining copies of the GIVE "I Am Live" 7"; picked up the debut LP from RVA's own SLUGZ, the newest LP from the almighty COLD WORLD, a handful of the latest LP releases from Dirt Cult like the BLANK PAGES LP, UNWELCOME GUESTS LP, and AUTONOMY / NO SIR I WONT Split LP; some rad singles from Grazer Records (POW!, SO WHAT, and COCKTAILS), the debut 7" from the UK's SNOB, the long awaited debut 7" from Atlanta's CRIMINAL INSTINCT, and a few choice reissues from VERBAL ABUSE, SIEGE, and PF COMMANDO.  A lot more new records not mentioned here, so check the full list below!

Stocked up on some of the new MERCY KILLINGS tape which features 2 ripping new tracks from their upcoming 7" as well as a live set, and some rad demos from Richmond's CHRISTI, CROWN COURT from the UK, and STERILE MINDS and FATIGUE (both from the Bay Area).

They show NO signs of slowing down with their LP "Wild Stabs In The Dark". 10 Songs of incredible early 80's UK meets late 80's NYHC.  The Flex are part of the new breed of UKHC, and "Wild Stabs In The Dark" is a milestone in this new sound and in this new age. STERILIZED "Chemical Dust" 7"
The English may have invented it, but as always, the Americans perfected it. Blazing, brutal, USHC influenced D-Beat from Olympia. 4 songs of in your face P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N. Every record comes in a custom d-beat style sleeve and on illustrious white vinyl.  Released simultaneously along with a 7" on the almighty Warthog Speak label.  EAT IT AND DIE. IRON YOUTH "S/T" 7"
Debut 7" from this Austin, TX outfit that shares members of Glue and Institute. Although they may share members with those bands, they do not share sounds.  Iron Youth is a massive, nasty, sweat-filled stinking sock of ugly, bottom-feeding hardcore. Think No Trend if they were more suicidal and were bred on a diet of early 80's USHC.  Limited to 300 copies and NEVER to be repressed. Most of the copies are gone. Buy one now or lose out forever. WILD HONEY "Seventeen Forever" 7"
Wildhoney is a shoegaze band from Baltimore, MD. On this single, buried under thick layer of jangly fuzz, are some upbeat indie-pop gems sure to please fans of Cocteau Twins, Black Tambourine, and Medicine. The vocals are airy, yet powerful, maintaining a strong presence amongst the beautiful noise of the band. (Photobooth Records)

GIVE "I am Live" 7"
Give is a rock band from Washington, DC. This live record takes songs recorded by Ashley Sykes at two shows in Baltimore and DC. Two songs from each show. (Photobooth Records)

SNOB "S/T" 7"
Debut six song 7" from this great new London band who feature a member of Good Throb among others. A lot of bands recently have been described as 'Rudimentary Peni influenced', but this is definitely one of the few that actually bring them to mind, even if the songs are slightly faster paced. Great DIY packaging with riso-ed sleeves and hand stamped labels. (Self Released Records)

ANGEL DU$T "A.D." LP
Angel Du$t is an American hardcore punk band from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2012. It all started with their first EP, Xtra Raw, a collection of 8 songs that managed to be as catchy as they were explosively energetic. Traces of influence from bands like Bad Brains, The Stooges, Poison Idea, Black Flag, and Misfits are apparent, yet Angel Du$tmanages to contribute something truly unique that could have only come out of Baltimore. Even with influences that seem to draw deep into the ’80s and earlier, Angel Du$t finds a way to approach it all with a youthful honesty, with songs that touch on everything from the personal to the sexual to the socio-political. Their first full length, A.D., is due for release June 10th on REACT! Records / Reaper Records; 12 tracks recorded with Brian McTernan (The Explosion, In My Eyes, Polar Bear Club) that blur the lines between punk, hardcore, rock, and pop. (React! Records)

COLD WORLD "How the Gods Chill" LP
Years in the making, "How The Gods Chill" is the definitive Cold World album that the hardcore world has been clamoring for. Recorded by Will Yip (Studio 4) and Arthur Rizk (Salomon's Gate) "How The Gods Chill" is a thirteen song amalgamation of Hip Hop character and Hardcore heart. Openers "Blind" and “The Real Deal” bounce and stomp akin to "Urban Discipline" era Biohazard. While "Never Knows Best" and "No More Fun and Games" melodically and respectfully pay homage to influential legends Only Living Witness and Life Of Agony. It wouldn’t be a Cold World album without a myriad of diverse guest appearances. Queens rapper Meyhem Lauren, George Hirsch of Blacklisted, legendary Kool G. Rap, and even Max B are all featured on the album. Altogether creating an infectious melting pot of sound and spirit unlike anything out there today.  (Deathwish Records)

PF COMMANDO "Rough Sound" 7"
Originally released in 1980 as "Nu Ska Vi Ha", this second PF Commando single is a high point of early Euro punk rock. "Rough Sound" is the a-side hit, a massive pure punk blast that hits as hard as anything from the era, balancing melody and impact as effectively as early SLF or DOA. Two tracks on the flip maintain the energy and power, so you'll be turning this one over repeatedly. First reissue since 1980, in one of the best sleeves ever. (Ugly Pop Records)

PF COMMANDO "Manipulerade Mongon" LP
Self-released in 1979 by one of Sweden's most notorious bands, this monster debut was the country's first punk LP, packing in 15 tracks of pure three-chord bash at its most primal and aggressive. Vocals are alternately barked and snarled, guitars slash and buzz, the rhythm section thrashes along maniacally-- no pop, no art, just PUNK in the vein of Dead Boys, Viletones, Germs and early Black Flag! (Ugly Pop Records)

SIEGE "Lost Session '91" 7"
Long believed to be lost… the infamous unreleased SIEGE recording. While going through the archives of WEYMOUTH ROCK PRODUCTIONS, a cassette was discovered labeled “SIEGE Quincy Session w/ Seth.” Presented are four demo cuts that were meant to be the follow up to the legendary DROP DEAD cassette and CLEANSE THE BACTERIA compilation tracks. The original masters were damaged and completely unsalvageable.  Painstakingly restored by Lucky Lacquers, this 7″ is limited to 1000 copies. (Patac Records)

SLUGZ "S/T" LP
It’s been a long way to go, but SLUGZ are finally ready to roll with this new self-titled LP. Following their “Suit and Tie” and “Empty Space” singles, the Richmond area group reformed with a fully realized five-piece lineup. The eleven new tracks on this LP capture SLUGZ at their best yet – drawing from late 70s punk, adding a dose of speed to the mix, and bashing things out with just the right amount of rocknroll sensibility. The all-analogue recording on this album really allows the new dual guitar version of SLUGZ to cut through the mix, while the tight rhythm section and snot-dosed vocals present on earlier output shine through stronger than ever. After a couple of spins this album feels like a continuation of the raw, gritty punk rock that you know SLUGZ for melded with a more driving, forceful sound that’s propelled the band towards the release of this LP. Bust the shrink open on this album and see for yourself… LP includes a printed inner sleeve designed by artist William Chapman and is limited to 300 copies.  (Feel It Records)

AUTONOMY/NO SIR I WON'T Split LP
Autonomy: Our favorite collective of misfits is back with another - and quite possibly their best - batch of songs. The band plays a Crass-inspired brand of dark and melodic anarcho-crust punk. No Sir, I Won't are from Boston (members of Brain Killer, Awful Man, etc.) and give that Conflict-style assaulting peace punk. (Dirt Cult Records)

BLANK PAGES "S/T" LP
Berlin's Blank Pages released on the of the best records on the 2013 on Hardward Records out of Germany and Dirt Cult is rereleasing it for their upcoming US tour. Amazing dark and melodic punk for fans of The Fall and The Wipers, or contemporaries such as Red Dons/The Observers. (Dirt Cult Records)

VERBAL ABUSE "Just an American Band" LP
1983. The East and West were engaged in the cold war, economic collapse loomed just around the corner, democracy was slowly being strangled by Reagan and Thatcher, Orwell vision of 1984 loomed large on the horizon and Verbal Abuse recorded their seminal album, 'Just An American Band'. Having moved from Texas to San Francisco in 1981 and subsided on a diet supplied by soup kitchens and whatever else they could lay their hands whilst playing shows with MDC, The Dicks and The Big Boys, Verbal Abuse epitomized the term Hardcore. Theirs was a sound born of fury, born of righteous anger. This was hardcore in it's rawest form, undiluted by the outside world. The band were a soundtrack to a scene still in it's infancy, a scene that rallied and stood firm against the outside world. MTV had yet to sink it's corporate teeth into the scene, the notion of anything pop being associated with punk rock was a joke. While 'Just An American Band' may not sound as clean and polished as the slick boy band poseurs passing themselves off as punk rockers of today, it's power and passion remain as a testament to a time when to be hardcore, you had to live hardcore. Anything else was unacceptable. Re-issued by Beer City, along with a live set from the 1984 tour on which the band played with punk legends as The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, Die Krezen, Poison Idea and the Cro Mags, and featuring sleeve notes from the band themselves, 'Just An American Band' is the sound of liberty. The sound of an emerging force, of a band who lived it, eat it , slept it, dreamt it and did it. This is Verbal Abuse. This is Hardcore.  (Beer City Records)

NEWTOWN NEUROTICS "Hypocrite" 7"
If there was a vote for the best lyrical content in the 80s Punk songs, Steve Drewett of Newtown Neurotics would probably have blown everyone out of the water with his sharp to the point lyrics about the socio-political situation in the UK back during the Thatcherism. That aside, Newtown Neurotics were one of the best UK Punk bands of the second Punk wave. “Hypocrite / You Said No” was their first release from 1979. (Feral Ward Records)

COCKTAILS "Friday" 7"
On this follow-up to their self-titled EP, San Francisco’s COCKTAILS deliver a trio of buoyant bubblegum hits. Bouncy organ lines and propulsive guitar leads are the order-of-the-day here – a formula that recalls beloved jangle-pop bands GAME THEORY and THE LAST. But their subject matter – long work weeks, missed connections and misapplied makeup – remains more blue-collar and relatable than these references suggest. With aid from the sparkling production of Rob Good (WARM SODA), COCKTAILS have created three of the most uplifting songs you’re likely to hear anytime soon. (Grazer Records)

POW! "One Eyed Scorpion" 7"
Hot on the heels of their High-Tech Boom LP, space rockers POW! deliver more of the same: sneering vocals, wriggling keyboard lines and stinging fuzz guitars. A-side "One Eyed Scorpion" writhes and squirms before transforming into a full-on synth meltdown, all while being propelled by singer Byron Blum's agitated Eno-isms. The songs on the flip burn with proto-punk inspired misanthropy, complete with the primordial rhythms that SIMPLY SAUCER and NERVOUS GENDER once supplied. Like their Castle Face debut, the tracks here show a band seething over the state of their city. Lucky for us, they're still channeling that anger into enduring punk anthems.  Mastered by Mikey Young of TOTAL CONTROL. (Grazer Records)

SO WHAT "What You Do To Me" 7"
San Francisco's mutton-chopped rockers SO WHAT hark back to the days of catchy, assembly-line pop — when bubblegum bands like THE EQUALS and 1910 FRUITGUM COMPANY rightfully topped the charts. Nonetheless, SO WHAT temper the saccharine qualities of those groups with a punk and glitter-influenced sneer, incorporating lots of tom heavy beats, snotty vocals and distorted guitars.  The result is not unlike SLAUGHTER & THE DOGS covering KASENETZ-KATZ: a stomping, sing-along good time. A-side "What You Do To Me," a gritty rocker with melodic Townshend-ian backups, is worth the price of admission alone. (Grazer Records)

MODERN PAIN "Self Deconstruction" 7"
Modern Pain was formed in 2010 by 4 people with music taste on opposite ends of the spectrum for the sole purpose of playing straight edge music with no gimmicks. No bleached hair, no pseudo-positive lyrics. While their individual music tastes might not be similar, the few bands they mutually love have an apparent influence on their music; from classics like Integrity and Infest to more recent bands like Think I Care. With a handful of tours, a demo and an EP under their belt thus far, MP has no means of slowing down upon the release of Self Deconstruction.  (Six Feet Under Records)

NO TIME "S/T" 7"
Pittsburgh’s Oi! punks, No Time were formed by ex-members from one of Pittsburgh’s most brutal extreme acts, Heartless. This current musical reincarnation of sorts has found the band members repositioned on new instruments. Former Heartless bassist Adam Thomas is handling vocal duties and has already seen comparisons to Fucked Up’s Damian Abraham and seminal Oi! outfit, 86 Mentality. Longtime fans of punk rock and Oi! should find a lot to love here.  (Six Feet Under Records)

UNWELCOME GUESTS "Wavering" LP
Mixing the raw energy and heartfelt lyrics in the vein of Husker Du and catchy vocal melodies that are akin to those found on a Springsteen album, The Unwelcome Guests rock through songs leaving the listeners begging for more and the songs are sung with heartfelt conviction. From the poppy drunken sing-along style, to the slow heartbreak songs, to the country tinged mid-paced rockers (Dirt Cult Records)

NEEDLES/PINS "Shamebirds" LP
Airtight power pop from Vancouver, Canada for fans of Steve Adamyk Band, Sonic Avenues, Gentleman Jesse as well as classic Canadian power pop bands like Teenage Head and Pointed Sticks. But this stuff isn't just a carbon copy. Needles//Pins have a sound all of their own. (Dirt Cult Records)

HOAX HUNTERS "Comfort and Safety" LP
The best music can stop time. The best songs have sounds that surround you, drowning out everything else. They annihilate year and age.  On Comfort and Safety, Hoax Hunters flood you with a hell of a lot of the best music. Fleets of buzz-rumble guitars that pull you out of your day, wave on wave of songs bust loose, buoy and buffet, like your first favorite record all over again.  This record is a torrent of noisy American rock: Sonic Youth squeals, Hüsker Dü hook-howls, Drive Like Jehu's ascending tensions, Dag Nasty's drenching intensity. (Negative Fun Records)

SETE STAR SEPT / NEW YORK AGAINST BELZEBU Split 7"
In a world full of generic grindcore split 7"s, this one stands a bit taller and shines a bit brighter than the norm. Sete Star Sept is....basically the best band in the world. While their discography grows at an exponential rate, I think this recording is a cut above the rest, and it holds a special place in my heart as it's a product of Mike Walls (Official Lotus Fucker Noise Scientist and resident SPHC audio engineer), recorded on our home turf here in Baltimore. This perfect recording captures Sete Star Sept spontaneously generating totally wild and chaotic grindcore that just barely holds enough form and coherence to qualify beyond "noisecore". For fans of harsh music, there is no equal. New York Against Belzebu is a legendary Brazilian noisecore band that comes from a slightly different scene than bands like Noise and Industrial Holocaust. This material is some of my favorite NYAB stuff to date, totally frantic and balls-to-the-wall noisecore with wild guitar styles, unhinged and chaotic drumming, and crazy fucked up vocals. All grind freaks, hail the masters. (SPHC Records)

BRODY'S MILITIA "Napalm Zepplin Raids" 7"
Y's legendary rednecks return with their most rocked out effort to date. You may remember the fast-as-fuck hardcore of their older releases and their previous band Hellnation, but this record has only a few blastbeats and LOTS of sick 70's hard rock riffing and hardman's swagger. While the quintessential Brody's Militia material is a more evenly-keeled mix of fast hardcore, 70's hard rock, and country, this record leans very heavily into the "hard rock/heavy metal" territory, and it's definitely for the better.  This EP is such a fascinating counterpoint to all their more generic fast hardcore records. It shows an evolutionary endpoint of the band and a successful mastering of their influences. Out of their large discography, this is one of the must-have releases. (SPHC Records)

LAS OTRAS "Devolver el Golpe" LP
Las Otras are an all women hardcore punk band from Barcelona. After a well received 7" they are back with a new 12" for their US tour of the west coast.  They are taking their cues from local bands of their friends in the DIY punk scene as well as 80's hardcore and punk like Ultimo Resorte and Antidogmatikss. Their new 12" is faster, but they are just as angry as before. Unabashedly political, the lyrics are still are about their radical feminist outlook and are screaming about the injustice that surrounds us. This isn't trendy or cool. This is pissed hardcore! (Discos Sense Nom)

HEAVY NUKES "Ultra Mega Raw" 7"
This is amazing, a one man side project of Swedish band Anger Burning, and it's just totally perfect Cimex/Shitlickers raw punk. When I got this I thought it was kind of joke/parody record (dis is getting pathetic.. sort of vibe) but actually it's deadly fucking serious raw punk, much better than most "raw punk" bands out there. Has that "broke into the studio in the middle of the night and recorded" sound quality. The vocals, drums and guitar tone are all perfect like a 1982 Swedish jam.  (Static Age Records)

MERCY KILLINGS "Snuffed Out" Promo Tape
Two brand new songs and a live set on this latest offering from VA's MERCY KILLINGS. Killier follow up to their debut EP, these two songs are a teaser for their upcoming "Snuffed Out" EP, out this fall on Beach Impediment. (Beach Impediment Records)

CROWN COURT Demo Tape
Crown Court is a band out of London, England playing Oi! the way it was meant to be played. Drawing influences from Slaughter and the Dogs, Menace and throwing in a bit of French melody a la Camera Silens and L’Infanterie Sauvage and you have 3 songs featuring solid riffs, catchy leads and simple melodies that perfectly captures the UK sound we all have come to love. (Mind Rot Records)

FATIGUE "Dog Bodies" Tape
The perfect soundtrack to watching the soul of real life bleached down to an unrecognizable, squeaky-clean, child-safety prison outside of your control. FATIGUE is growling, ripping and tearing back from the deepest, darkest corners of the gut. Take the ugly snarl and familiarity of first wave punk, add the blood-thirsty fervor and frostbite of a vacant Cass Corridor warehouse in 1982, and steady it with the gobbing, No-Future confidence of the UK punk sound of that same year, and you end up with a snarling beast similar to this. With ex- and current members of SYDNEY DUCKS, CAGED ANIMAL, YOUNG OFFENDERS, SCALPED, and HUNTING PARTY among the ranks, the sound all makes sense. The savagery of "Outlander" being the standout track. Nasty. (Demo)

STERILE MIND Demo Tape
New band from from the Bay Area, playing a style that pulls influences everywhere from Poison Idea (PYK era) to Copout/Deathreat, Totalitar and other Scandi greats. (Demo)

CHRISTI Demo Tape
Yes! A new Richmond band that you need to take note of immediately, CHRISTI have just released this eight song demo that's as downright catchy as it is rocking. These four ladies pull together a mix of stomping rocknroll-based punk (see: Cramps, Gories) and pop inflected sweet (ala Shop Assistants, Protex) that really stands out from the pack. CHRISTI are a soulful, rocking, and irresistibly memorable bunch that have gone and unleashed hit-after-hit on this demo, serving as their first true recording. This full length tape offers a preview of two tracks that will later appear as the debut CHRISTI single on Feel It. Dig in now and see why these ladies are quickly becoming one of Richmond's best. MUKEKA DI RATO "Gaiola" Tape
It's our enormous honor and extreme pleasure to help reissue this classic piece of Brazilian hardcore on the cheapest, easiest format, perfectly suited and timed for your summer boombox requirements.  The 00's should be remembered for a lot of things....and one of them is Brazilian fastcore. Bands like Discarga, I Shot Cyrus, Merda, Infect were popping out a respectable volume of high-quality fast hardcore, and seemed to put Brazil back on the international hardcore map. But the band that stands out the most to my ears has always been the legendary Mukeka di Rato, who are my favorite post-80's Brazilian hardcore band. Mukeka di Rato play a loose, wild, super-catchy, and hyper-energetic style of fast hardcore with an appreciation for anthemic mid-tempo pop rockers and the occasional samba/reggae/chiiiillllll part (and the occasional blastbeats-and-grind-vocals part to balance). They have an instantly recognizable sound and vibe entirely their own (well okay maybe their other band Merda feels the same way to me haha). MERDA "Greatest Shits" Tape
A collection of songs spanning the entire discography of this noteworthy Brazilian hardcore band. From their earlier chaotic and unhinged fast hardcore style to their later style of fast hardcore more influenced by skate rock and pop-punk, Merda has always managed to evoke a feeling of happiness within me. When hardcore is this raging and energetic, but still catchy and fun in a sincere way, it can't help but make me smile. Hearing instant-smash-hit sing-alongs like "Maradona" and "Takusan Nomitai" interspersed amongst balls-to-the-wall mosh-inducing fast hardcore is a guaranteed formula for success. To me, this is one of the best bands in the world. (SPHC Records)

NUTS ZINE Issue #13
Short and sweet summer issue from NYC's NUTS! Issue #14 clocks in at just one 24"x 36" newsprint page but is jam packed full of content as always. The highlight here is a GAS RAG interview that delves into singer Zach London's rather interesting gig as a paid sex worker, among other things. Also included, a rather opinionated but well thought out review of New York's Alright fest 2014, plus the live show and record reviews you've come to expect from NUTS! Another visually arresting issue that's a little quicker to digest this time around! (Nuts)

Two new releases out today; we've got the second 7" EP from Austin, TX's BREAKOUT"TrueCrime" 7" on Grave Mistake, and the debut EP from Richmond, VA's ASYLUM on the Vinyl Conflict Label. Very very excited for both!

Both EPs are up on the Grave Mistake Bandcamp page streaming in full. I also decided to just put the DL's up for free, but of course, if you want to throw a couple of bucks our way for the download we will gladly accept it! My apologies for hitting you with two updates in a row, but I've never been good with planning accordingly so this happens from time to time!

 

 

Once again I let the new releases pile up over the past few weeks; but last night I finally got them all up in the webstore so here's another update for you! Before I get into it, we put out a couple of new 7"s a few weeks back and I strongly suggest you pick them up! We've got the second 7" EP from Austin's BREAKOUT, and the debut 7" from Richmond's ASYLUM (on the Vinyl Conflict Label). Considering the two releases we did prior to these (EARTH GIRLS and SUPERCRUSH) were some of the catchiest / most melodic releases GM has put out - figured it would be a good move to change it up with two of the hardest, most abrasive hardcore punk EPs we've done this year (of course, not including the ripping CRETINS 7" that came out at the beginning of Summer) … 

 

Anyways, back to the new releases; you can check out both the BREAKOUT and ASYLUM EPs on the Grave Mistake Bandcamp page - both are up for free download, so head on over and give em a listen. Up next is the TENEMENT "Bruised Music Vol. 1" LP singles collection. We've got the vinyl, covers, and printed inners in house and we've just got the art for the insert booklet, so hoping to have these ready to roll by mid November! This project has been in the works for almost a year now, so of course we are very excited to finally have this out - everything looks and sounds wonderful!

This webstore update is definitely a bit more of a "mixed bag" than usual, but I assure you it's ALL 100% quality!  Some great new singles and EPs, including the new AUSMUTEANTS single on Total Punk (haven't grabbed the new LP yet, soon though!), the 7" debut from RAZORHEADS, some copies of the WHO KILLED SPIKEY JACKET? "Gluehead" 7", the URBANOIA 7", THE BROOD 7", DAILY RITUAL 7", a nice little restock of the LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS "Sex Pit" 7", and the 7" reissue of the demo from LUMPY spin-off, CAL AND THE CALORIES.  If you wanna branch out of the HC/PUNK realm (but not TOO far), I picked up some cool EPs from the Nostalgium Directive label, like the POPULATION 7" the debut 7" from Baltimore's WILDHONEY (both of their EPS are HIGHLY recommended!), and a couple more; plus a couple of essential reissues like the YDI "A Place in the Sun" reissue and a top notch reissue of the LA PESTE "Better Off Dead" 7" single - a KBD classic!  And speaking of reissues, finally got some copies of the second X (Australia) reissue on Ugly Pop - the "Spurts" LP, and you should of course pick it up along with the "Aspirations" LP.

 

Some rad LPs in this update as well, like the debut long player from Canada's ZEX, the latest UKIAH DRAG LP, and the long overdue full length from St. Louis' (and Grave Mistake alums) one and only CARDIAC ARREST! However, if you've hit a fast hardcore/punk overload (hey, it happens and there's no shame in it) and are are looking to mellow out or lighten things up with something a little catchier, a little more melodic - then this update is the one for you! Grabbed some copies of THE ERGS "Dorkrockcorkrod" LP repress (this, of course, is an all time personal favorite of mine), the wonderful third LP from Baltimore's highly underrated DEAD MECHANICAL (along with some other cool releases from the Toxic Pop Label), the WEED HOUNDS LP on Katorga Works (another highly recommended release, possibly in my top 10 of 2014), and a bunch of releases from Run for Cover Records including full lengths from PITY SEX, TIGER'S JAW, CITIZEN, and BASEMENT. 

 

Finally, picked up a few new tape releases as well including the "City Baby Attacked By Bats" comp (featuring a bunch of great current NYC bands), BLACK PANTIES "Dead and Gone" tape, SOME NERVE tape, and DIA FINAL tape.

Here's this week's rundown; some essential 2014 listening from the wonderful 540 Records, who have been kind enough to deliver us a new IMPALERS record as well as an awesome new single from Brazil's RAKTA! Hopefully you've been able to catch Rakta on their current North American tour (sadly, they didn't play Richmond) or grabbed their debut LP. As expected, this new 7" has been on constant rotation here at GMHQ this week. And of course, a new IMPALERS 12" ... that's what we call a "no brainer;" both of these releases are highly recommended.

New in the Webstore for 11.7.14:

IMPALERS "Psychedelic Snutskallar" 12" (540 Records)
Well damn, here we are again. Another 12" from Austin, TX boss hogs Impalers. In the modern climate of music, nothing sticks. Every week there is a new cool 7" or tape making the rounds on social media, littering your feed with bandcamp demos and instragamed cassette j cards. It's hard to keep up, yet an amazing time of stimulation and excitement for punks worldwide. But in the midst of all this madness - it's nice to know you can count on Impalers every year to release the best record of the year.  Unless you live under a rock, you probably already know what to expect from these guys. Their LP last year topped year end charts high and low. And Psychedelic Snutskallar does damage in all the same places. Peerless d-beat, a work of art. Completely unhinged yet tight and in the pocket. This time they have upped the ante with a monstrous opening track that takes up the whole A side at a never boring 11 minute length. Tripped out artwork and packing concept by Sam Ryser (Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, Dripper World) and reworked material from short lived side project Sick Plot make this 12" EP a no brainer.

RAKTA "S/T" 7" (540 Records)
Brazil's Rakta unleash two new tracks of eerie and atmospheric post punk. From the moment the songs start you will find yourself trapped in a cave of beautiful, yet haunting tunes, in most cases, people will want to seek a way out, in Rakta's case, you will never want to leave. 'Tudo Que E Solido' is an instant nugget that fits somewhere between Blood and Roses and The Doors. It's driven by the tom tom work and the insistent and drone like keyboard work. The track builds and builds into a dark cresendo. On the flip is 'Serpente' - a 6 minute and 15 seconds dirge that's part Siouxsie And The Banshees''Lord's Prayer' and part 'Ballet Bag' demo era Rubella Ballet. The record comes housed in a beautifully put together booklet sleeve wraparound with printed inner sleeves with art by guitarrist Laura Lanca.

LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS "Collection" LP (Space Ritual Records)
From time to time, LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS prove themselves to be the terminus of the Slime Punk Express. Blown out and covered in slime, Lumpy gnashes his way through these 12 tracks about ghouls, gnats, piss, sex pits and bad breath. In the realm of screaming, searing "throbbing idiot punk" (as LUMPY calls it), this is gold. It's fast, it's vicious, and it does not give a fuck. Total raw, warped punk just like I love it! LUMPY AND THE DUMPERS sound exactly like what you'd imagine Ren & Stimpy's latin-jazz freakout band!  This band is about the filth inside, which is not to be confused with the darkness, it's not mental anguish and black godlusts that are spewing forth here, just the natural logistics of flesh, the slippery smelly stuff, honesty of form in the chitterlings and the old shambles. Semi-solid beings playing songs of uncomfortable physicality.  Wrap this whole package up in an absolutely gorgeous 2-color, screen-printed sleeve (art by LUMPY himself) and you have a 100% essential hardcore LP. Australian import!

PURA MANIA "Musica Para Gente Fea" 7" (CV Records)
Pura Manía, a punk band from Vancouver, Bc. They like French oi!, South American punk, Iberian punk and the all mighty Eskorbuto. Vocals in Spanish. This is punk for today’s generation, or that is what the vocalist likes to think.  Screen printed packaging on recycled/garbage materials from the streets of Vancouver.

DESKARRIADOS "Maketa Grabada en Mad Box…" 7" (CV Records)
Venezuela 1990 sucked. Just 1 year after the riots/looting that left thousands killed by the army. Deskarriados recorded this songs for a demo that never came out in a proper release. This riots, also known as “El Caracazo” was an answer to a shitty economic moment. The city was sad and depressing. In the mine while, anger, frustration and the “no future” mood of the country dragged young people into punk. All this emotions can be found in this piece of vinyl.  Musically and geographically, Deskarriados is right between the Mexican punk rock sound of the “Rock Nacional Vol.2: Solo para punks” compilation and Olho Seco first 7” hardcore masterpiece. 77 catchiness and rough and simple 1-2 drumming keeps everything interesting. Venezuelan first punk hasn’t been documented properly. We hope this 7” helps somehow.

WANUY "Muerte" 7" (CV Records)
Wañuy is from Lima-Peru. Hardcore is a big part of their life. This is not a choice, it is simply an answer of what the see and live daily. Wañuy are punks, their lyrics are dark. Their sound primitive. Maybe they are not the best at their instruments. But this is what punk is all about right? This songs were made and recorded in one day.  "Wañuy" means death or eclipse. It is in Quechua, an Andean language spoke in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.  This 7" comes in three different cover colors: radioactive pink, booger green or classic white.

PURE DISGUST "S/T" 7"(Flophouse Records)
Pure Disgust took DC by storm when they released their demo with their unique brand of wicked anthemic harDCore with strong socio-political lyrics. Since then they’ve grown incredibly tight and upped their ferocity with an intense live to boot. These young guns, ranging in age from only 15-21, successfully capture their anger and urgency on vinyl with their brand of brute force HC a la LIFE’S BLOOD, while still kicking out memorable punk riffs in the same way that BLITZ leave songs in our heads. Pure Disgust has become a force to be reckoned with and there is little doubt that this scorching platter will turn heads far and wide.

WIPERS, THE "Nome Noma" 7" (Meanbean Records)
Released in 1980 on THC and again in 1981 on Traction under circumstances still largely unknown by the remaining members, the sole 45 from Montreal punks the Wipers remains difficult to track down today. What's more, if you ask us it's still far too obscure, which is something we here at Meanbean aim to rectify! Although disco fever was taking Montreal by storm at the time, the Wipers went against the trend and ended up making one of the best punk singles ever produced in the province of Quebec. However, this single isn't just a historic artifact; both songs are total hits! "Nome Noma" goes off like a bomb! It's a killer, groovy punk anthem from beginning to end! On the flip, "Bowery Boy" shows a little more of a pop side with an infectious chorus and a cool strutting guitar riff throughout. Some may even call this one powerpop, but with lyrics like "poor Bowery Boy, hasn't seen the Pistols in weeks" we wouldn't dare say so! How great were the Wipers? Even the most famous female singer in the world, Celine Dion, thought they were great! However, they were considered too "alternative" by radio programmers in an era when disco was king, so the band unfortunately disbanded shortly after the release of the record. One member later achieved provincial fame with his following pop band. Originally released in a plain white sleeve, Meanbean is beefing this thing up with a brand new sleeve design made from the bands' archival materials, including pictures and liner notes by members of the band. Like the song says, NOME NOMA, COMES FROM VEGA!

CHEMICALS, THE "Out of My Mind" 7" (Meanbean Records)
Meanbean's second release by Montréal's The Chemicals is a little obscure pop jewel. Influenced by classic sixties bands, seventies punk, eighties new wave and all-caps POP, the band ended up writing two incredibly catchy numbers that have all the ingredients to make a hit: big hooks, killer guitar riffs, catchy singalong melodies, and an awesome pop sensibility. While both songs were definitely infused with the New Wave vibe prevalent at the time, "Out Of My Mind" shows a bit of a sixties vibe and "Run and Hide" on the b-side shows more of the band's punk edge. No matter what though, one thing remains consistent on both sides: we're talking about goddamn hits here! There's no reason you won't go simply gaga over this thing unless you are completely tone deaf or utterly tasteless. If the majority of records coming out in the mid-eighties had even a third of the level of songwriting on display here, nobody would be talking shit about the eighties anymore! This record gained some attention nationwide on college radio at the time, and eventually the band was even approached about the possibility of a European tour. Unfortunately they broke up before they were ever able to capitalize on their local success. This was originally released in 1985 on the VOT label in a plain white sleeve, but Meanbean is serving this tasty treat up for you in a new sleeve design featuring archival pictures and liner notes from the band. We're doing all this because Meanbean cares and doesn't do anything half-assed! *CANADIAN IMPORT

MENSROOM "I Quit" 7" (Self Released)
Pretty great self-released 7” by Richmond, VA’s Mensroom, which starts off in a sprint with “Passive Problems” and then slows to a crawl for the last two tracks. Big burly riffs are what’s on order here: “MCV“‘s bouncy lead spills into a nasty guitar solo, and “I Quit” sounds like it could’ve fit right into Rollins Band’s Life Time LP. Creative drumming and welcome tempo changes keep this one afloat and set it apart from the hordes of Side B of My War worshippers. Rock solid 7” right here. NUKES, THE "Fascist Perverts" 7" (Man in Decline Records)
The Nukes play hardcore punk that sounds like it was conceived in that glorious period between 1978 and 1981 when punk was speeding up but hardcore had not fully developed as a distinct sound all its own—think: THE NUBS (SF), THIS IS BOSTON, NOT LA-era GANG GREEN AND F.U.'s, ANGRY SAMOANS and newer bands like CAREER SUICIDE. On Fascist Perverts, the band tears through 6 songs in less than 7 minutes and the no-frills approach works to punishing effect. The Nukes are a band with tons of promise and we hope this is the first of many recordings by the band, so they can take their place as the next addition in a long list of venerated CHICAGO bands.

CLEANSING WAVE "Crude" 7" (Man in Decline Records)
The "CRUDE EP" is the latest release by Massachusetts punk quartet, CLEANSING WAVE. Crude serves as a follow-up to a previously released demo, a "s/t" 7" EP, and a series of slit releases, including a split flexi with GASH, a split cassette with TINITUS, and a split 7" with San Francisco's MIDNITE BRAIN. Cleansing Wave is known to win audiences over with their ripping live show full of reverb-drenched vocals and all-out punk attack. To honor the session that produced Crude, Man In Decline Records created a 3-Sided 7" cut by long-time MID collaborator and lacquer wizard, Adam Gonsalves of Telegraph Mastering. The A-Side contains two songs and a reverse cut third track, making the overall 7" a 5-track EP.

STUN EVENT "S/T" 7" (Man in Decline Records)
STUN EVENT was started by former OUT COLD members, Kevin Mertens and John Evicci, after their recent collaboration on OUT COLD's posthumous release: A Heated Display. Kevin had been the original singer for OUT COLD and rejoined the band on vocals in order to help them complete their final recordings after the tragic passing of the band's primary songwriter: Mark Sheehan. After their collaboration on A Heated Display, they decided to start a new project, including John's brother, Fred (another OUT COLD alumnus), and these six songs are the first recording from the band. Musically, STUN EVENT provides a fresh take on a genre that can be predictably derivative.The familiar elements are there but they're executed in such a way that the maturity of the musicianship and songwriting comes through. There are nods to early punk influences from disparate and somewhat unexpected sources: like THE FIX or NEGATIVE APPROACH playing "Paranoid Time" but the end result is all their own.

DAMAGED HEAD "Tunnel Vision" LP (Man in Decline Records)
Sweden’s Damaged Head delivers a full-length of 15 brand new songs that brilliantly follows up their self-titled 12" EP; released in spring 2014 on Man In Decline (US) and Adult Crash (EU). "Tunnel Vision" finds the band continuing their successful formula of combining old USHC with classic Swedish hardcore (e.g., Totalitär), only this time with even more energy and urgency. This is likely due to the fact that the music for Tunnel Vision was recorded, live, in less than an hour. For those keeping track, “Tunnel Vision” was recorded by Kenko (MEANWHILE, BURNING KITCHEN) at the Communichaos Media Clay Station and Damaged Head is comprised of ex-and current members of AGENT ATTITUDE, HERATYS, INSTITUTION, and NITAD. If you find yourself wanting more hardcore with an emphasis on songwriting and hooks, this is the record you’ve been waiting for.

DAMAGED HEAD "S/T" 12"(Man in Decline Records)
DAMAGED HEAD is a new band from Sweden with ex-and current members of HERATYS, INSTITUTION, NITAD, and AGENT ATTITUDE. Damaged Head plays traditional hardcore with punk sensibilities and hooks (think POISON IDEA, TOTALITÄR, and newer bands like AMDI PETERSENS ARMÉ and CAREER SUICIDE). After only a short time as a band, they recorded this self-titled EP with Kenko (MEANWHILE, BURNING KITCHEN, etc) at Communichaos Clay Station and the result is one of the most energetic and exciting hardcore EP's we've heard in a very long time. The Damaged Head EP contains 6 songs ranging from fast hardcore blasts to midtempo anthems, with the longest song clocking in at barely over 2 minutes. The North American pressing of the Damaged Head EP is a one-sided, screenprinted 12″ packaged in a single-pocket LP jacket with an insert.

BURNING KITCHEN "Many Wonder About the Meaning of Life" 2xLP (Man in Decline Records)
Sweden’s Burning Kitchen were instrumental during the ‘90’s in the development of an aggressive melodic punk sound that would inspire a whole generation of Scandinavian bands to come, ranging from MASSHYSTERI, GORILLA ANGREB, TERRIBLE FEELINGS and VANNA INGET to American bands like ARCTIC FLOWERS and SIGNAL LOST. During their initial period of activity, Burning Kitchen toured Europe extensively and were known for their live shows and substantive socio-political lyrics. Since their breakup, they have been extremely missed and as their releases have become harder and harder to find, a demand for a vinyl discography has grown. Man In Decline Records is honored to release this double LP compilation which features the trilogy of 7"s (Confirmation, Consolidation, Confrontation), the "Damn If You Do, Damn If You Don't" 10", various compilation tracks, and 8 UNRELEASED TRACKS from 1998 (35 songs total).  This 2xLP also includes a wide spine jacket and a 12 page booklet with pics, flyers, a short history of the band, etc, and, as always, you will receive an immediate download of the record upon purchase. CANCERS "Dig" 7" (Off the Books Records)
Two extremely lo-fi sludge rippers from ex-members of Dead Dog (NY/GA) and Unfun (Canada). The first two songs set to wax. Real stoned. Real raw. We have some of the last copies of this (most-likely) one time pressing! Get 'em before they are go for 10 times as much on e(vil)-bay! Comes with download code.

NO JUSTICE "Still Fighting" 7" (Underestimated Records)
Backstock copies of the second press (gold vinyl) of this classic early 2000's hardcore record. Along with bands like like TEAR IT UP, LIFE'S HALT, GORDON SOLIE, etc ... this MD band played a vital role in pumping life back into the hardcore scene with no frills fast and pissed hardcore punk. Remembered most notably for their chaotic live shows, this E.P. was the only official release from this band. While some may argue that the intensity of their live set couldn't be captured on record, this EP definitely delivers six tracks of raging hardcore. When the opening chord of "political scheme" rings out ... watch for flying bodies and drum equipment. Members went on to play in a slew of bands including 86 MENTALITY, GIVE, DESPERATE MEASURES, SET TO EXPOLDE, LOJ, and THE AFTERMATH.

SMARTSAM UTLOSNING Demo Tape (Flophouse Records)
The SMÄRTSAM UTLÖSNING demo is an international effort from members of Uppsala, Sweden's Agent Attitude and two members of DC's Coke Bust. These five songs pay homage to the members' favorite past and present Swedish d-beat hardcore bands a la Herätys, Totalitär, Dismachine and Mob47 while still maintaining its own flavor. Recorded live in a practice room with a couple of mics, the production is raw in a way that compliments the style and brings out the intensity. The demo includes a double-sided lyric insert for English-speakers who cannot read the Swedish text. The creepy, desolate lyrics were too good not to translate.

GOVERNMENT FLU "Tension" Tape (Flophouse Records)
Government Flu are are a hardcore punk band from Warsaw, Poland that play a really cool mix of classic early 80's US style HC, hard-hitting burly hardcore and hints of old Polish punk like Dezerter and Post Regiment in their fast parts. I released this tape as an American version of their upcoming LP for their US tour around Damaged City Fest in Washington, DC. Government Flu proudly made history as the first Polish punk band to ever tour the United States. It's impressive how tight this band is, both live and recorded. As with all punk and hardcore, the quality of the drumming is ultimately what determines the quality of the band and with European legend WOLFI rocking the kit, this does not disappoint in the slightest. Check the European vinyl version on Refuse Records.

FEEDING CHAIN "Public Execution" Tape (Flophouse Records)
Feeding Chain are a vicious band from the southern coast of England who draw influences from the speed and hatred of Infest with the driving hardcore punk influence of Negative Approach and more recently… early Think I Care. Features members of Never Again, Repentance, Sectarian Violence, and others! The UK has been killing it lately with hardcore and the bands from up North have received a lot of much deserved recognition. Feeding Chain remind us that the entire island is diseased, all the way down to the southern coast. Absolutely crushing.

SEM HASTRO 2014 Demo Tape (Flophouse Records)
Sem Hastro is a band that was formed in June of 2014 in Washington, D.C. I met Xavero from doing a Brazilian tour after he helped out alot. We invited Xavero to come to Washington, D.C. and come to Damaged City Fest. He accepted the offer, stayed with us and liked D.C. so much that he stayed for 6 months. Once he was here, we had to start a band with him. The four of us sat down and wrote a bunch of Eskorbuto meets Ramones meets Final Conflict songs and sped them up. We jammed these songs a lot in the Summer months and even played a handful of local shows before recording the demo. The band plans on continuing with Xavero back in Brazil. We’ll all be around.

NO LOVE Demo Tape #2 (Sorry State Records)
After an earlier self-released demo, Raleigh, North Carolina’s No Love move to Sorry State proper for their second release. Dispensing with some of the poppier tendencies of their demo, No Love play fist-pumping melodic punk along the lines of the Buzzcocks, the Avengers, and the Canadian Subhumans, occasionally augmented with the sarcastic snap of bands like the Angry Samoans. Tape #2 contains four new tracks recorded by Colin Swanson-White (Davidians), and the new recording does a much better job of capturing the band’s dense combination of melodic bass lines, dueling lead guitar and anthemic vocals. Cassettes are professionally duplicated and come with a digital download. Limited to 100 copies.

WRIGGLE Demo Tape (Sorry State Records)
Greensboro, North Carolina's Wriggle are pure North Carolina hardcore... loud, fast, heavy, and slightly metallic in a tradition that started with No Labels and COC and carried on through Double Negative, Devour, and Stripmines. I'm not sure how aware Wriggle are of that tradition or if they even care, but this demo cassette is one of the rawest, meanest, and catchiest slabs of hardcore I've heard in ages. With its spot-on 4-track production this could have been a lost contribution to the No Core compilation cassette, and the music is undiluted angst of the type only a small southern town can engender. Recommended for people who would sooner sell a kidney than part with their copies of Flex Your Head or This Is Boston Not LA.

We did these as a nice tribute to one of the raddest bands I've ever known to come out of Richmond, THE LADIES!  A fitting release for Grave Mistake #69, with some over the top artwork we've come to expect from these dudes. They did us the honor of doing a little reunion show last month, and we made sure to have these tapes ready for that - the full 18 song LADIES discography in just under 16 minutes, remastered specifically for this collection. Only 150 pressed, and we have a little over half of them left for mailorder so do yourself a favor and grab one (oh, and they make GREAT Christmas gifts)!

The Ladies were an integral part of the mid-to-late 2000's hardcore punk scene here in Richmond along with bands like GOVERNMENT WARNING, DIRECT CONTROL, WASTED TIME, CLOAK/DAGGER, SOCIALCIDE, etc; their brand of no frills high octane garage punk complimented their hardcore contemporaries to a T, while bringing a healthy and much needed dose of trashy, tasteless humor into the mix.  Perhaps you had to experience them first hand to truly appreciate their greatness, but hopefully this collection will serve as a fitting reminder as to why they will go down as one of the most memorable regional bands of that era.

S.H.I.T. "Feeding Time" 7" (Static Shock Records)
Over the last couple of years, Toronto's S.H.I.T. have come out of nowhere with their acclaimed demo tape, to releasing two killer 7"s, to even opening their own DIY venue, S.H.I.B.G.B's.  They are now back with their third 7" and it's just as essential as the two preceding. You may remember 'Feeding Time' as the opening track off their demo, it has now been re-recorded and is now even more of a rager than before. On the flip, you get a brand new track, the slow burning 'Private Lies'. The package is wrapped up with perfect artwork by Sam Ryser (Crazy Spirit, Dripper World and Dawn Of Humans).

FORWARD "Against Their Insanity" LP (540 Records)
What do you say about a new FORWARD record? They've left the "What's The Meaning Of Love?" and "Revolution" hooks in the annals of punk legend and, along with Prank's War Nuke And Death Sentence from 2012, have saved their most searing material nearly two decades into their run. Ishiya's gravel-throated vocals are more devastating than ever and the term "bombastic" has rarely been more accurate than on this six song banger. The anti-war bent on Against Their Insanity is unforgiving (and refreshing), and the anger and frustration translates to the harsh metallic riffing on "Murdered" while the frenetic pace of "What Would You Do?" matches the frustration conveyed by the song's lyrics. FORWARD bookend the whole thing with two of their best tracks ever, "Renunciation Of War" and "Determination," just to remind you that they have absolutely earned the legendary that they hold. So yeah….what do you say about a new FORWARD record? You say it's a fukkn bulldozer.

WETBRAIN "S/T" LP (Painkiller Records)
With a rap sheet of prior bands as long as a phone book - Cleveland's WETBRAIN arrives with their much belated debut lp. Musically this is tuneful speed-core to the absolute max, with call-backs to everything from The Adolescents, to (early) Huskers, to Artificial Peace, to the first Indigesti lp, all fronted by the inimitable Larry Darvocet. This is surely the party record of the year.

V/A "Charred Remains Compilation 2xLP (Radio Raheem Records)
In the annals of early 80’s American Hardcore, no compilation holds more seminal weight than ‘Charred Remains’. Initially released in 1982 on cassette through Bob Moore’s Version Sound label and available in limited supply, the release served the world the first earfuls of such groundbreaking and legendary bands such as Husker Du, Die Kreuzen, Void, Violent Apathy, Toxic Reasons, Articles of Faith, Rebel Truth, Personality Crisis and Sin 34. Besides the actual sounds contained on the tape, ‘Charred Remains’ was a testament to that primary quake of DIY ethics that empowered many a short haired youngster to start bands, record labels and fanzines and forge the underground to where it is today.  To find an actual original copy of this compilation and not have to give up a kidney in exchange would be quite a feat, but now Radio Raheem waves their magic wand and ‘Charred Remains’ is something for everyone to enjoy in the vinyl format. Painstakingly remastered from the original 1/4" master tapes, with liner notes from Die Kreuzen vocalist Dan Kubelski, ‘Charred Remains’ is rescued from the collector ghetto and plopped right down into your lap to behold.

PORNO CASSETTES "Your Face, A Fucking Disgrace" 7"(Radio Raheem Records)
Originally released in 1983 in a microscopic run of just 100 copies (of which only about 50-60 survived), the Porno Cassettes' lone single has been a mythical UK want list topper for many years. Information on the original pressing was so scant that it was thought that the record didn't even exist! And did we mention this record is quite the arse-kicker? These two tracks hold their own against the best that Britain had to offer in '83 — you'll be singing along in no time! Radio Raheem brings you this high quality reissue cut from the original masters, in a limited edition of 500.

NEGATIVE INSIGHT #2 Zine w/ CHAOS UK "Studio Outtakes" 7" (Zine)
Here is the second issue of Negative Insight, entitled the "Bristol Breakout" issue. With a focus on the deafening noise of the punk scene in Bristol, England in the 1980s, it contains comprehensive interviews with Chaos UK, Disorder, and Riot City Records founder Simon Edwards. The issue features many previously unpublished photos from the personal archives of band members and others involved in the scene, a large four panel fold out poster, articles, and more. It comes accompanied by a Chaos UK 7" containing two rare studio tracks including an outtake from the "Burning Britain" EP recorded in 1981 and a song from the time of the first LP in 1983 packaged in a Riot City inspired sleeve. This issue is 36 pages printed as a magazine on coated paper and printed by a union print shop with all layouts done in the traditional cut 'n paste aesthetic with typewriter text. This should appeal to fans of British punk, 1980s hardcore, and those who enjoy reading about rampant drug abuse and living the chaos.

CROSS is an swedish punk musical duo, active since 2012 and composed of vocalist and drummer from now long gone Masshysteri. Trebly noisy guitars, machine-driven drums and vocals crawling on top of each other to be heard, make up this duo's subterranean sounding debut.

The first new VK recording in 3 years and what a gem it is. Now residing in separate states, Sulier and Swanson-White return with two new dark moody tracks rooted in punk but definitely post-punk in delivery. “Last House on the Right” is the definitive standout of the two with Swanson-White’s new-wavy guitar rhythm combined with for Sulier’s baritone vocals, making this a one of the better post punk track of 2014. TOKEN ENTRY "From Beneath the Streets" LP (Mad at the World Records)
MATW is proud to reissue a record that needs no introduction. By the time Token Entry released “From Beneath the Streets†in 1987 on Kevin Seconds' Positive Force label, they were already one of NYHC's most beloved bands. Having existed in a slightly different incarnation as Gilligan's Revenge in the early half of the 1980's, Token Entry were comprised of scene vets from NY's hardcore-rich borough of Queens. Produced by Randy Burns (Death, Possessed, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies), Split Image was originally released through Suicidal and Caroline Records in 1987, and has since remained widely regarded as an elemental release as part of the ‘80s crossover explosion. Remastered by Brad Boatright (Bl’ast!, Sleep, Obituary, Black Breath) the “Split Image” Southern Lord issue comes with a massive amount of bonus material including the Welcome to Venice comp. tracks, Personal Onslaught Demo, Refuse to Quit Demo etc.). TECHNICOLOR TEETH "Blood Pool/Drips" 7"(Accidental Guest Recordings)
Let’s be honest: every town has a dorky shoegaze band. While most of their shoegaze/dream pop peers seem to hide lazy songwriting behind heavy fuzz and hazy vocals, TECHNICOLOR TEETH doesn’t let their pop songs get completely buried beneath the distortion. When Technicolor Teeth released their debut LP, Teenage Pagans last year, they brilliantly combined heavy grungy riffs with a dream pop sensibility. And on their latest single, Technicolor Teeth forge a darker path that still winds its way back to great pop music. “Blood Pool” peels away its heavy guitars like a dress, proceeding into bleak, beautiful hypnosis. This is the type of song hinted at on their debut LP, now fully realized. The B-side, “Drips,” channels early, playful Soft Machine pop, mingled with the downer vibes from the flip side. If you haven’t been paying attention to Technicolor Teeth, these two songs will make you take notice and realize why this new trio is one of the most exciting bands going.

FACE THE RAIL "Learn to Die" LP (Katorga Works Records)
Face the Rail is one of the Bay Area's longest running and most under-appreciated hardcore punk bands. Playing a unique and high-energy amalgamation of classic west coast skate punk/hardcore, Revolution Summer DC, and even surf rock, the band has proven to be one of the most interesting Bay Area bands, to us, at least. This is their first record in four years and it's more than worth the wait.

FUGAZI "First Demo" LP (Dischord Records)
In early January 1988 and after only ten shows, Fugazi decided to go into Inner Ear Studio to see what their music sounded like on tape. Despite the fact that Ian, Joe, and Brendan had been playing together for nearly a year, it was still early days for the band. Guy had only been a full member of Fugazi for a few months and only sang lead on one song ("Break In"). It would be nearly another year before he would start playing guitar with the band.  The sessions only lasted a couple of days, but tour dates and indecision about the tape would delay the final mix for another two months. Though the band was at first pleased with the results, it soon became clear that this tape would remain a demo as new songs were being written and the older songs were evolving and changing shape while the band was out on tour. It was decided that the session would be passed out free as cassette copies, with the band actively encouraging people to share the recording. In the spring, Fugazi went out on its first U.S. tour and a few weeks after returning from the road they went back to Inner Ear to record what would become their debut Dischord release, the self-titled 7-song 12" EP.  The only song from the demo session that was formally released was "In Defense of Humans", which appeared on the State of the Union compilation in 1989. Now, some 26 years later, Dischord is releasing the entire first demo including the one song ("Turn Off Your Guns") that wasn't included on the original cassette. LPs will come with a postcard set.

SOUL SIDE "Trigger" LP (Dischord Records)
This release compiles Soul Side's 1988 EP, Trigger, with the band's three-song single, Bass·103, both of which have been out of print for over a decade. The songs have been remastered for vinyl by TJ Lipple and the artwork has been updated to include design elements from both releases. Soul Side formed in Washington, D.C. in 1986. Originally called Lunchmeat, the band released a split-single and — after switching names — a full-length on Sammich Records. The quartet would later record a single, an EP, and an album for Dischord before disbanding in 1989.

SLANT 6 "Soda Pop Rip Off" LP (Dischord Records)
This is a reissue of Slant 6's full-length debut LP, Soda Pop*Rip Off. Formed in Washington, DC in 1992, Slant 6 was Christina Billotte, Myra Power, and Marge Marshall. The trio released a 7" single, What Kind of Monster Are You and a second full-length, Inzombia, before splitting up in 1995 while on tour in Europe. Billotte would go on to perform in Quix*o*tic and Casual Dots. Recorded in 1993 with Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara at Inner Ear Studio, the record has been out of print for at least two decades. This reissue has been remastered by TJ Lipple and pressed on red-colored vinyl. Each copy includes a complimentary digital download coupon for the 13 original album tracks plus the three songs from the What Kind of Monster single.

BIKINI KILL "S/T" 12" (Bikini Kill Records)
This is the 20th anniversary reissue of Bikini Kill's debut 12" EP. The vinyl reissue includes a new fanzine in the form of a 34" x 21" poster featuring interviews with Ian MacKaye and Molly Neuman (Bratmobile), liner notes by Layla Gibbon (Skinned Teen, MRR), excerpts from the band's zines (Bikini Kill #1 and #2, Jigsaw #4), and photos from the band members' personal archives. Formed in the fall of 2012 they recorded their debut 7″ in february 2013 and their new "Artificial Peace" 7 in july 2014. HARM DONE "S/T" 7"(Straight and Alert Records)
HARM DONE is a new French band (Nantes) featuring members of RAW JUSTICE and REGARDE LES HOMMES TOMBER, started in the Fall 2013. They recorded their debut 7″ in April 2014. They play some kind of cold and no frills powerviolence filled with Infest's speed, Sex Prisoner's ignorant breakdowns and Entombed's HM2 metallic guitar sound. For Fans of Nails, Sex Prisoner, Mammoth Grinder, Napalm Death, Soul Search, Powerviolence.

SOCIAL DAMAGE "Eye for an Eye" 7" (Straight and Alert Records)
SOCIAL DAMAGE are back with an awesome debut 7", not long after their 2 great demo tapes ( that we repressed on a 7" in May 2014). "Eye For An Eye" brings 5 new songs + an old one re-recorded of super fast NYHC somewhere between STRAIGHT AHEAD and JUDGE. This is a split release between STRAIGHT & ALERT records (France) and Life To Live records (USA). For fans of Free Spirit, Intent, Judge, Freedom, Straight Ahead and The Straight Edge.

DADS "I'll Be the Tornado" LP (6131 Records)
The sophomore full-length from Dads. Recorded by Neil Strauch (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Iron & Wine, Owen) at MinBal Studio in Chicago and mastered by Carl Saff (Dinosaur Jr., Guided By Voices, Speedy Ortiz), "I'll Be The Tornado" is the follow-up to the duo's highly acclaimed 2013 "Pretty Good" EP and marks a decidedly more diverse approach to songwriting for the band. Excellent emo-indie-punk for fans of all the Kinsella projects (Cap 'n Jazz, Owen, There Their They're..), Moose Blood and Deep Elm bands of yesteryear!

HEMINGWAY "Pretend to Care" LP (6131 Records)
Lots of bands have been mining the fertile landscape of '90s music for inspiration lately, and HEMINGWAY is no exception. What sets this Portland, Oregon band apart though is what they're tapping for influence, reaching deep into the lesser known realms of that decade and extracting elements of infectiously melodramatic pop. Think Silver Scooter, Superdrag, and Knapsack, yet filtered through nearly two decades of collected dust and bargin bin obscurity. Some might call the music HEMINGWAY creates "emo" but to do so relegates their heartfelt creations to something less than genuine and authenticity is something this band has unmistakably.  With the release of their debut album, "Pretend To Care", HEMINGWAY put forth ten tracks of heart-on-the-sleeve pop goodness that simultaneously feel sunny yet full of melancholy, a dichotomy essential in the most masterful of '90s releases too. Recorded by Jack Shirley (Joyce Manor, Tony Molina, Deafheaven), the sonic quality of "Pretend To Care" matches the great songwriting contained within.

NONA "Through the Head" LP (6131 Records)
How would you feel about mixing your grunge with some indie pop? Philly-based rock group NONA presents an extremely interesting take on indie punk with Through The Head. Vocalist Mimi Gallagher has a voice that is sure to warrant strong opinions. Rarely if ever has a punk band been so unabashedly twee.  Their sound is a nice interplay between punkish alternative rock and grunge. The riffs find that right balance between hard-hitting and melodic. Even when the band slows things down a bit, the results are worthwhile (see “Bottles”).  NONA is already a fairly polished group, built upon impressive songwriting and razor-sharp hooks. It’s absolutely a listen that won’t initially stick, but if you can learn to appreciate Mimi’s vocals, you will be handsomely rewarded.

CHOIR VANDALS "At Night" 7" (6131 Records)
Some might not consider St. Louis, Missouri a hotbed for captivating music, yet Choir Vandals are among a new crop of bands from the city challenging such a notion. Their brand of alternative / indie rock caught the attention of many with the release of the impressive "Darker Things" EP in late 2013 and the momentum hasn't let up since. Soon after their debut surfaced, the band signed with 6131 Records and began crafting what would becoming their sophomore effort "At Night", an EP with four songs that all equally merit notice for their great songwriting and brooding catchiness.

DADS "Pretty Good" 7" (6131 Records)
New Jersey's Dads made a splash with their debut full-length, "American Radass (This Is Important)," in 2012, so it's no wonder their newest release, an EP entitled "Pretty Good," would up the ante. This impressive, four-song effort marks a shift of sorts for the duo though, yet still sees them maintaining the hook-laden songwriting they've become known for creating.

TEEN DEATH "Crawling" 7" (6131 Records)
Hailing from Richmond, VA, Teen Death has quickly made a name for themselves as one of the bands to watch calling this thriving scene home. They pack the punk punch, yet maintain an infectious sense of melody, all layered over with a great grungy vibe.

NIKKI AND THE CORVETTES "S/T" LP (Bomp Records)
Garage pop goddesses. Innocent 60's inspired fun. Nikki had to be the hardest working gal in punk rock: with her girl backup singers and tasty band, she toured & played hundreds of shows every year. Her music was uncomplicated, rockabilly-based, and full of her fun-loving personality.

GERMS, THE "Germicide" LP (Bomp Records)
Live at The Whiskey 77 We are seldom lucky enough to hear one of our favorite bands at the earliest state of development. In the case of the Germs, LA's most radical punk band, someone was fortunately on hand with a remote 8-track studio to record their very first gig. Part of Kim Fowley's 1977 "Punk Rock Weekend" at the Whiskey a Go Go, it's a rough, honest, eye-opening set, showing the Germs as they really were. Originally released in a limited vinyl edition in 1980, Germicide quickly went out of print, then was issued cassette-only by ROIR. Now on 180 gram vinyl for the first time in more than 15 years.

SWELL MAPS "International Rescue" LP (Alive Records)
Comprehensive compilation of this seminal '77 U.K. band (originally on Rough Trade) featuring Epic Soundtracks, Nikki Sudden, Richard Earl and Jowe Head. The releases include various 7"s, songs from their 12" albums plus unreleased tracks, new mixes and material released for the first time. All remastered. The Swell Maps were influential for U.S. bands like Minutemen, Replacement and Sonic Youth, among others.

AR-KAICS, THE "S/T" LP (Windian Records)
Richmond, Virginia's THE AR-KAICS play a naïve brand of punk music in the tradition of american teen beat and amateur garage circa 1965 – or '66, at the latest. Ask a band member, however, and they’re quick to describe the sound as "a wild-ass ride." On their s/t debut LP for Windian Records they’ve traversed the muck and climbed out of the ooze, to walk pointedly upright on their own eight feet. Like all the dilettante stones and Jr. Beatles before them, hammering away on department store instruments in their parents’ garage, THE AR-KAICS are one with their inner troglodyte child (hear: back from the grave, pebbles, teenage shutdown et al. comps), showcasing a wealth of irresistibly simple hooks, fuzzy strut and primal swagger. Lucky for you this sound is now, and THE AR-KAICS  are coming in hot in 2014!!!!  After a slew of singles last year, THE AR-KAICS  offer us a proper album's worth of thirteen a-side originals; snottier (“no, no, no”); lonelier (“this time tonight”); darker (“be my baby”); rawer (“can’t keep waiting”) than any critic or casual listener could have forecast.  Recorded remotely during a weekend in the woods at Rag's BB&R by Jeff Kane, the band had little contact with the outside world (apart from beer runs to the nearest gas station and late night screenings of major league and grumpy old men). What you get is an album in the true sense, ranging from ragers to moody ballads and back again, without a snoozer in the bunch."

DEEP WOUND "S/T" LP (Damaged Goods Records)
Deep Wound, was a strange and powerful unit inside the doctrinaire confines of Hardcore. Although they were all kinda nerdy (excepting secret weapon Charlie Nakajima), they shredded in a very explicit way. There were some obvious structural debts to the Oi! Bands in their compositions, but they approached the exterior textures with stylistic nuances that were distinctly North American. As the Neos did on their Hassiban Gets the Martian Brain Squeeze EP, Deep Wound compressed time in ways that were extreme, and way outside the standard Square Dance beat that had been defined by Robo's drumming for Black Flag.  But Deep Wound's actual story is nothing out of the ordinary.   One day in early '82, J met a Dee Dee Ramone lookalike at the Oi! singles bin. This was bassist Scott Helland. Scott posted a flier soon after looking for musicians into Anti-Pasti, Discharge and the like. J called to audition and had his dad drive him and his drums over to guitarist Lou Barlow's place in Westfield. They had a singer already, but J got them to replace him with Charlie, and Deep Wound was there. They made a cassette, got a few gigs in Boston with the X-Claim bands (SSD, FU's, Jerry's Kids, etc.) and became the Western Mass band most likely to open for Hardcore visitors. They cut an EP, had tracks on Gerard Colsoy's Bands That Would Be God comp and even did a late-period session with Gerard singing that has disappeared into nada.  And every day they vowed to play faster. And they did, eventually developing a blur that could verge on experimental noise. Finally they burned as fast as they could, and realizing that was the case, they stopped. It was 1984.

BREAKAWAYS "Walking Out on Love (The Lost Sessions)" LP (Alive Records)
After spending nearly 30 years gathering dust in a closet The Breakaways makes its worldwide debut! Born in 1978 after the demise of The NERVES, this short lived combo was formed by PAUL COLLINS and PETER CASE, just prior to the formation of The Plimsouls and The Beat. "Walking Out On Love - The Lost Sessions" compiles all the band's known material, including studio recordings, demos, and acoustic rehearsals. "This is the sound of pop on the streets of Los Angeles circa 1978." -- Paul Collins. "I'd forgotten these tapes even existed. We were definitely homing in on something." -- Peter Case.

DESTRUCTION UNIT "Deep Trip" LP (Sacred Bones Records)
Destruction Unit are an American band formed in the Sonoran desert of Arizona. Formed by Ryan Rousseau, D. Unit was initially a synth-heavy three piece whose other members were Jay Reatard and Alicja Trout (Lost Sounds); likewise Rousseau was also in the Reatards before Jay went solo. Born out of the nucleus of the Memphis Goner Records scene and transplanted into Tempe, AZ, Rousseau has grown the band in the last few years into a full sonic assault, which now includes three guitar players (himself, Nick Nappa & Jesco Aurelius), his brother Rusty Rousseau on bass, and a 19 year-old classically trained drummer, Andrew Flores. This line-up has released several cassettes on their own label Ascetic House, a small run LP, Void on Jolly Dream and most recently a limited edition 7” on Suicide Squeeze. Deep Trip is their 1st proper studio album, produced by Ben Greenberg of The Men, Hubble & Pygmy Shrews at Vacation Island in NY. Morphine boogie for the 21st century noise addict.

MEDICINE "Home Everywhere" LP (Captured Tracks Records)
During this past year Brad Laner, Elizabeth Thompson and Jim Goodall eschewed the 90's nostalgia touring circuit trod by their peers and instead dug deep to bring you "Home Everywhere": A collection of new songs created with a gaze that is omni-directional. An answer to no other band, movement or genre (don't be lazy, you). An ambitious work that could be no one else but said three lifer music weirdies in full inspiration mode.

5.6.7.8.'s, THE "Bomb the Rocks: Early Days Singles 89-96" 2xLP (Sweet Nothing Records)
This Japanese all-girl (except once, for a year or so) quartet-turned-trio is almost certainly best known for appearing in the Quentin Tarantino movie Kill Bill, Vol. 1, or maybe for licensing their song "Woo Hoo" in a commercial. This compilation contains "Woo Hoo," but that track's almost soft enough to be worthy of Shonen Knife, and not at all representative of the ladies at their best. The raucous countdown that opens the disc -- "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 54321!" -- gives a much better indication of what the 5.6.7.8's do. They're a punky garage/rockabilly act who write songs like "She Was a Mau Mau,""Motor Cycle Go-Go-Go,""I Was a Teenage Cave Woman," and generally come off like a slightly less distortion-fixated, distaff version of Guitar Wolf. Frontwoman Ronnie Fujiyama's last name is fortuitous, because she's every bit as raw a rock & roll howler as Wanda Jackson, who famously sang "Fujiyama Mama." Her guitar skills aren't half bad either; she cranks it up to almost Link Wray levels of scorch, as her sister, Fujii Sachiko, slams the kit and bassist Omo throbs away. This is amped-up, three-chord rock & roll, sometimes with simple lyrics and other times instrumental (but still punctuated by high-pitched shrieks). the 5.6.7.8's are a Japanese national treasure who deserve the international audience they've earned through hard touring -- this disc, which, like its title says, compiles their early singles and EPs (most of which are otherwise unavailable in America, except for the first six tracks, which Sympathy for the Record Industry released as the Bomb the Twist EP), is a near-perfect introduction to the band

5.6.7.8.'s, THE "Teenage Mojo Workout" LP (Sweet Nothing Records)
"The 5.6.7.8's of course aren't new on the game. Their cat-ish primitive amalgam of garage rock n' roll-a-billy attracted a loyal fan base early on an with the right moves and some dose of luck, hit (quite) big. I must admit that even myself and because of the gals here, gave the attention deserved to the Rock-A-Teens... They were right in front of me, KICKS crew had covered their story but all i wanted was three little devil driven Japanese chicks to kick my ass! Yoshiko's my favorite! A cute little lynx that playing the guitar on a Link Wray level while screaming on microphone words that sometimes needs you to check on the lyrics (if these exist somewhere...) or the original version if it's a cover tune, to understand what she says! But who cares? She's for sure the "Fujiyama Mama" that legendary Wanda Jackson sang some decades ago. Her sis Fujii Sachiko behind the traps tries to keep steady their train, a for sure of far East Miriam Linna and the tall (at least of the three...) Yoshiko Yamaguchi, playing the bass somewhere in between of the Dee Dee Ramone and the Sun records hillbilly cats. "Teenage Mojo Workout" it's for me their best record. It worth's his price alone just for their version on "Hanky Panky"! I mean, listen to the filth that's produced from Ronnie's guitar (especially in the beginning) and go tell me if I'm wrong anywhere here! They cover also Bo, Booker T & the MG's, Ike & Tina or Bob & Earl proving the best way their intentions and their gusto! All in all, a FUN three chord rock & roll CD best served hot for your next party. Imagine the Ronettes playing with their own instruments The Sonics, Bo Diddley and Wanda Jackson and you're closer than ever to the 5.6.7.8's wild and cute world!"

LOOSE PLANES "S/T" 7" (6131 Records)
Hailing from Detroit, MI, Loose Planes formed with one goal in mind: to create catchy alternative rock that harkens back to the days when it was okay to have a little power in your sound and catchiness in your hooks. Almost immediately, they bring to mind '90s greats like Dinosaur Jr. and Sugar, yet simultaneously infuse a vibe only musicians that grew up in the current punk scene could create. Their first offering, this self-titled EP, exhibits an incredible knack for writing songs that are both infectiously catchy and powerfully intense.

First Grave Mistake webstore update of 2015! I hope everyone is having a great new year so far! This year is looking to be extremely productive for the label, so hopefully this will kick things off on the right foot. A ton of new releases in the webstore to start it off right, but before I get to that a couple of quick things to mention first ...

I'm going to be marking down several hundred records in the store next week - so if you missed the Black Friday Sale, you'll have another opportunity to grab some good records for a nice price. Look for that update sometime next week. This time, these titles will be on sale for good until they sell out, and most likely won't be restocked as I need to clear some space and get some of these older stock out of here to make room for both distro new releases as well as the ton of GM releases coming up this year.  Which brings me to my next topic …

Expect a 2014 recap / 2015 preview by mid January. No new surprises for upcoming releases as I think I've disclosed everything in the works so far, but I'll give you the run down as to what's coming up and when, as well as the status of each project. I think more than half of 2014's planned releases got pushed for various reasons but hopefully we will see them all this year.

Debut 7" from NYC's best new hardcore punk band. Taking the blueprint of blistering USHC with riffs reminiscent of Swedish classics like Totalitär and one of the most powerful vocalists going today, Ajax have quickly become one of the most interesting contemporary hardcore bands.

Fully embracing the esoteric guitar parts that have set them apart from their peers in the past few years, Deformity's second record is the culmination of five years of existence of one of NYC's more unique bands. This newest single serves as the purest representation of their brand of noisy hardcore punk. Mission complete.

After a slew of singles and 7" EPs, this Long Beach, CA based quartet develop their style of aggressive Dangerhouse Records meets early 80s SoCal hardcore even further. Yes, the L.A. Times called them a "female fronted BLACK FLAG" - it's that band. Twelve new cuts of pre-Reagan, post-neutron bomb hardcore punk.

HASSLER "Fed Worked and Watered" LP (Deranged Records)
Hardcore punk band from Toronto Canada founded in 2012. Featuring a very long ex-members list from bands you may know from the past like BRUTAL KNIGHTS, CAREER SUICIDE, TOXIC HOLOCAUST, REPROBATES, and BAD SKIN. After releasing a 7" ep on Schizophrenic records and a follow up on Beach Impediment records, the band's sound is fully realized on this new LP. 013 "Takaisin Todellisuuteen" LP w/ 7" (Svart Records)
013 were short-lived but hugely influential and full of cult potential. The three-piece from Pukkila, Finland, partook in the Propaganda EP in 1981 (reissued by Svart in 2013) and the legendary Russia Bombs Finland compilation LP the following year. The band's only standalone release, the LP Takaisin todellisuuteen, was released on Propaganda Records in 1983, and the band split up shortly after. Original copies change hands for hundreds of dollars these days. The Svart reissue presents the album as close to the original as possible, and expands the original artwork into a gatefold, also adding a bonus 7" inch, which contains compilation tracks, thus making this release a complete 013 discography.

DRIBBLE "Lovers" 7" (Cool Death Records)
The debut cassette for Melbourne punks Dribble was a putrid and disturbing affair. A sordid drunk/drug take on the Electric Eels, The Stooges and Velvet Underground’s White Light, White Heat that was as harsh and discomforting as the broken glass, spit, and beer that vocalist Texas Tom often rolls in at their raucous live shows. After some delays, they have released “Lovers” their debut seven-inch, a co-release between Cool Death, a label that bassist Tom Bradford is involved with, and Distort. The sound has been cleaned up a bit, and by cleaned up," we mean like a Kleenex to a stab wound. Let’s just say it. They are one of the best punk bands in Australia." - Noisey

FORSEEN "Helsinki Savagery" LP (20 Buck Spin Records)
After a few EPs, including 2013’s well-received Structural Oppression 7-inch, Finland’s Foreseen HKI now break out in the international metal scene with their first LP. An explosive burst of raw crossover, Helsinki Savagery fuses the 1980s iterations of US thrash (Vio-lence, Exodus) and urban hardcore (Cro-Mags, Leeway) to create a merciless album of absolute jawbreakers. MAMMOTH GRINDER "Underworlds" LP (20 Buck Spin Records)
It’s been nearly four years since the last Mammoth Grinder full-length, Extinction of Humanity, was released via Relapse Records (CD) and Cyclopean Records (vinyl). That album showcased the band’s direction into a distinctly death metal permutation, full of aggression and punk rawness, and they continued in this spirit on 2011’s split LP with fellow Austin, Texas-based group Hatred Surge. Now, after a long wait and much anticipation, Mammoth Grinder has found a home on 20 Buck Spin for the release of their wildly destructive third full-length Underworlds.  The album marks a peak at which Mammoth Grinder have sharpened and perfected their sound into a seething grind / death / thrash maelstrom of intense degree. Unrelenting in concentrated raw precision and focused power, Underworlds careens violently through ten tracks with effortless versatility and the fixated songcraft expected of a band on their third record. Tracks like “Wraparound Eyes” with its Unleashed-style midsection, or the short sharp shock of “Paragon Pusher,” illustrate Mammoth Grinder’s mastery over multiple variations of metal to assemble their own sound. CRAZY SPIRIT "Demo" LP (Toxic State Records)
Much-needed repress of this demo from one of contemporary NYC punk's trailblazing bands, Crazy Spirit. This is where it all started… US pressing of the CRAZY SPIRIT DEMO 12" which was first pressed on Quality Control out of the UK. A screenprinted mailer and hand stamped inner sleeve conceal the secrets within. .Spawned from the concrete, steel, garbage fluid and tar of New York City natives, Crazy Spirit presents not a demonstration of a series of concise ruminations on life, that seemingly impose order with beginnings and ends, but a constantly mutating chimera, the monotonous screaming of millions of parasitical beings crawling through the many layers of this urban nest they have built to enslave themselves in. These are variations on a theme by urban strigils scraping away the extraneous chatter to identify repetitive patterns and weave them together. Hear yea the booming Crisis marching of a cool death or the sarcastic melody of snakes all compered by a Paul Mahernesque hyena.

CRAZY SPIRIT "S/T" LP (Toxic State Records)
Much-needed repress of this landmark LP from one of contemporary NYC punk's trailblazing bands, Crazy Spirit. "Here is the long awaited debut LP from our beloved Crazy Spirit. Fans will not be disappointed, haters will hate. There are no new tricks here and the band does what it does well better than it has before, pulling out some of the most earsplitting, wonderful riffs it has busted out to date. The album flows as naturally as the trademark gallop carries you from the muddy, audio-sample in its beginning, to moody end. While the album sounds worlds better than previously recorded material it maintains all of the essentials - strictly 8-track recordings, same gremlin, same round bass tone, and so on.Really excellent songs that successfully take the writhing CS sound and serve up stuck-in your brain hooks."

GG KING "Unending Darkness" LP (Scavenger of Death Records)
In a time of turmoil and trouble, media blitz and the news replaced by numbered lists... a time of ever-lengthier lifespans and shorter attention spans, GG King triumphantly returns with Unending Darkness - the full realization of a midnight vision of dark ambitions and mediocre reality. Mature in the right ways, wonderfully punk in the others. Like an angrier, more effusive Greg Sage discovering nihilism, temporarily possessed by the chattering ghost of Bobby Soxx - and a soundtrack to the two burning non-denominational churches throughout the tame hills of Oregon. A definitively punk album, still gleaning all of the worthwhile parts of black metal and reassembling them, conveying what the French call a certain? I don?t know what.  Featuring a much more lush recording than its predecessor (by collaborator and partner Ryan Dinosaur), UNENDING DARKNESS finds GG King exploring the very metaphysical problems he?s described in passing in previous outings. It could be a concept record detailing the story of a man slowly resigning himself to an untimely end, or an absonsion into monkhood, or a life as a powerpop collector - there is probably no measurable difference in the fates. A rabid and unique taste in low-class music repurposed as something new and transcendent, like the roar of a DeLorean's engine after throwing a bunch of futuristic garbage into the flux capacitor. The sounds of lament, detestation, a charming bitterness. The barks of a neighbor?s dog, cowbells? xylophones. Like smoke billowing from a fire at a sex toy factory - ominous clouds that harken to something so profound and vaguely debaucherous that you feel the need to share it with the world.

1981 "Dancing" 12" (Svart Records)
Following the release of their compilation LP Finnish anarcho/post punk outfit 1981 get remix treatment from some of the leading producers of contemporary Finnish dance music scene: Jori Hulkkonen, Femme En Fourrure & JD Filpper remixes of 1981 track Dancing are out on 12” vinyl with the original version included 19th of September via Svart Records & Passing Bells.

RUDIMENTARY PENI "The EPs of RP" LP (Fanclub Pressing)
Finally available on vinyl again, two of the very best hardcore/punk 7"s of the early 80's UK scene. These two eps sound somewhat different, but are both at the very next level of hardcore punk. The first EP is one of the most unique sounding hardcore punk records ever, so wild, discordant and raging, a true masterpiece. The FARCE ep, has a more traditional hardcore punk sound, but is to my mind the true masterpiece. Just a mind blowing and powerful blast of pure punk energy, from some of the most original minded artists to be caught up in the early 80's DIY punk scene.

VARUKERS, THE "Bloodsuckers" LP (Radiation Records)
The Varukers were one of the first groups of the UK 82 movement - the second generation of punk rock that took the spirit of ’77 and merged it with the incessant beat of NWOBHM – responsible for creating UK hardcore. Heavily inspired by Discharge, The Varukers released three 7”s in the early ‘80s before this, their first and most definitive album, came out in 1983 on the legendary Riot City Records (Vice Squad, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos U.K.). Back in print on LP, thanks to Radiation Reissues, Bloodsuckers is one of the definitive pieces of early UK hardcore, full of Sabbath inspired guitar work, pounding rhythms and aggressive anarchistic lyrical content. ESSENTIAL!

NAPALM "It's a Warning: Singles & Live" LP (Static Age Records)
A side is 7"s and b side live 1982 from this German punk band. Reminds me a lot of UK bands from the same time period like Partisans, Blitz, One Way System. NAPALM were from Hamburg, Germany. They started in 1979 and packed it in 1982/1983 after recording only two 7inches.  In the aftermath of the first significant wave of Punk Bands from the UK touring Germany, four friends from Hamburg didn't just wanted to stand aside and watch. After only a couple of shows they've been asked to record a single with label Moderne Musik. It sounded just like the band's first live shows, maybe even worse, but nobody really cared. The following years saw the band play some more or less chaotic tours in Germany and Europe, together with the likes of INSANE, GBH and ENGLISH DOGS.

CULTURE ABUSE "The Day Dreams of Nothing" 12" (6131 Records)
Culture Abuse are a wild pack of animals that have been stirring things up along the West Coast since Fall 2013. Their amalgamation of hardcore / punk into an almost psychedelic rock sound is unlike anything ever heard before, feeling both vitally important and on the brink of disaster all at once. Following the digital release of their debut EP, "The Day Dreams of Nothing," 6131 Records quickly jumped at the chance to work with this incredible band and put plans into motion for a vinyl release of the EP. The band also recorded three new songs, showcasing their ever-evolving songwriting, one of which has been included on this release as a previously unreleased, vinyl-only bonus track ("Good Thing"). The remaining tracks from this session will surface in early 2015 as a two-song single.

DREAM RITUAL "S/T" 12" (6131 Records)
As soon as 6131 Records heard Springfield, Missouri's Dream Ritual, they immediately knew they wanted the band to join their roster. Fortunately for the label, this impressive new group agreed and planning quickly began for the release of their debut EP. Clocking in at just over 27 minutes, even calling this six-song collection an EP feels a bit unfair, but Dream Ritual manage to demonstrate a powerful grasp on songwriting. Their take on grungy post-hardcore sounds remarkably true to the '90s style, yet maintains a vibrant contemporary sensibility.

HATRED SURGE "Human Overdose" LP (Iron Lung Records)
HATRED SURGE has been around for a while but only release an LP when it is truly ready. During the session, Alex described this recording to us as "a rhino on pcp" and we cannot disagree. This current back to basics 3 piece phase of HS sees a much more apparent death metal influence but still retains the "grinding violence" stylings they are known (and loved) for. Make no mistake, this LP will smash you.

At the base of this demo is a hardcorepunk band that can clearly execute on point, though COMMONERS mix in a certain atonality and varied tempo that really sets 'em apart from what you'd expect out of Austin. There's little here in common here with other locals like Glue, Breakout, Institute, etc. Instead, COMMONERS sound leans toward LP-era Die Kreuzen or maybe even Spike In Vain. Total disaffected guitar wash topped with shrill vocals makes for one of the more original sounding demos I've heard in some time." - Feel It Records

Greetings! I hope everyone's 2015 has been good so far ... still keeping busy over here so I'll make this update quick. Label update / GM 2015 Preview is coming within the next week so hang tight for that, for now we'll just stick with the new webstore stuff (and I'm going to be brief with that rundown as well).

LATEX "S/T" 7" (Sensual World Records)
After a killing demo and a tour through the midwest/Canada, LATEX now has their debut 5 song EP out. Stompy, tough-as-shit, blown out hardcore punk from Philadelphia. Punchy, pogo-esque basslines and chorused out guitars add a US touch to UK82 influenced punk anthems. The singer’s performance could be compared to a (a lot) tougher ELECTRIC DEADS, shouting out the words with more force than the norm. Former and current members of Twerps, Low Charge, State Violence, and Anti- Zen.

GAS RAG "6 Song EP (Euro Press)" 7" (Even Worse Records)
American vinyl pressing of Gas Rag's flawless demo, for those of you that missed out on da tape version. Six tracks of pure, unadulterated Midwestern idiocy that combine equal parts Fix, Anti-Cimex, and leather, melts 'em in a pot and huffs the resulting concoction. Whether you're wall to wallin' or pogoin' from floor to ceiling, you know this is for you.

AJAX "Bleach for Breakfast (Euro Press)" 7" (Even Worse Records)
One of the most talked about hardcore punk demos 2014 is put to wax by the band themselves. So good, a Swede got the tape cover tattooed on his leg. Can't beat that!

EEL "Endless Fucker" 7" (Even Worse Records)
8 song EP, this is the european 7" version of the endless fucker session,the US 12" on konton crasher and mindcure with a different cover. 8 songs of DrillmessMadnessViolentPunkerScum,which leave you highly uncomfortable,somewhere along the lines of cleveland hc meets UK 82,meets japan.

LEATHER "Easy" LP (Slugsalt Records)
Philly's own Leather finally has an LP. Nine tracks of chorus-blown "loud rock" pressed at 45 rpm. Yelled and wailed vocals and lyrics with brutal imagery. For fans of hardcore punk, grunge, and noise-rock.  2011 saw two EPs: 'Wretch' on Fan Death Records and 'Sterile' on Jade Tree. Before that was 'Anchorite' on Caesar Cuts, and a demo cassette from 2009 that Skeleton Head Records pressed as a 7" in 2012.  Fast forward to March 2014 and EASY pops up on Bandcamp without any gaudy displays. By this point, Leather has called it quits, but they've at least given us pyre on which to burn 'em. As a fledgling label, I'm very happy to give EASY a physical release. I hope you enjoy the 9 tracks as much as I do.

SKEMATA "S/T" LP (Sorry State Records)
Raleigh’s reigning kings of hardcore release their debut vinyl, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most scorching records of the year. With a couple of regional tours and a sold-out demo under their belt, word has slowly been spreading that Skemäta is one of the most untouchable hardcore bands on the planet, and this LP confirms that for the masses. Recorded at Legitimate Business in Greensboro, North Carolina and mastered by Ryan Abbott at Side Two Studios, Skemäta’s debut brilliantly captures the band’s “everything louder than everything else” philosophy. There are legions of bands playing hardcore, d-beat, or whatever these days and one might say that Skemäta aren’t reinventing the wheel, but they’re just better than everyone else. The riffs are both more technical and catchy, the vocals are more brutal, and the rhythm section is more pummeling. Aside from perhaps Impalers, no other hardcore band out there is coming close to touching this.

DAVIDIANS "Night Terrors" 7" (Sorry State Records)
Second 7” from this new Raleigh punk band and the inaugural release in Sorry State’s North Carolina Singles Series. Davidians were born from the ashes of Double Negative, featuring three former members of that band along with Colin Swanson-White (Formaldehyde Junkies, Voight-Kampff, Safewords) on guitar. While you can definitely hear some of Double Negative’s quirky hardcore punk in Davidians’ sounds, the more straightforward elements have been expunged, leaving a gritty, off-kilter sound that’s equal parts Saccharine Trust and CopShootCop. Dark music for dark times.

LOUDER "S/T" LP (Sorry State Records)
After a couple of singles on the Japanese label Episode Sounds, Sorry State is proud to release the debut LP from Japan’s Louder. I was introduced to Louder by Tsubasa, the guitarist of Sorry State band Rough Kids, and it’s clear why he likes them so much, as Louder bear more than a passing resemblance to Rough Kids’ song-centered, ’77-influenced punk. However, Louder bring a distinctly Japanese take to the table, augmenting the Buzzcocks / Adverts-style melodic punk with some of the wild garage sounds of bands like the Registrators and Teengenerate. 10 tracks, all of them hits.

STEPDAD SS "Mad About It" LP (Vile Audio Label)
Following the 2013 demo, STEPDAD SS kicks out a brand new 12 song debut LP. Building on a foundation previously laid by bands like Poison Idea, Totalitar, and Necros; SDSS manages to meld those, along with a few other off the wall influences into their own sound and not come across as another rehashed 80's hardcore tribute. The first press of 250 copies comes housed in heavy, screen printed jackets with cover art from Colin Clark.

SECRET TOMBS "Secret Tunes" LP (Wigtunes Records)
"I've been very excited about this release for a long time. Secret Tombs' debut The True Story Of... was one of the best rock releases I had heard in years and they've rerecorded it and their follow-up, Homemade Braces, to perfection. Ever imagined what AC/DC would sound like if Dead Moon wrote and recorded it? Probably not, but Secret Tombs is it and this record is phenomenal. Some of the best riffs I've heard in a LONG time. REAL KIDS "Shake … Outta Control" LP (Ugly Pop Records)
It's been 38 years since Boston's REAL KIDS debuted with the finest rock'n'roll record ever committed to tape, and now they're back with a long-awaited new full-length on legendary hometown label Ace Of Hearts and Canada's Ugly Pop. Of course, long time fans can always be excused some apprehension when a band of this vintage presents new material so deep into their career, but there's no cause to fret here. “Shake...Outta Control” is a fantastic return to form, a strong set of powerful, memorable and engaging songs that do absolute justice to this band's legacy. While some bands lose track of their own soul in forced attempts at progression, and others risk diminishing returns by simply treading the water of their earlier work, 2014 finds the Real Kids negotiating this path beautifully. Boasting both the raw energy and tough hooks of 1977 and the matured chops and expanded palette of frontman John Felice's “Nothing Pretty” LP, the dozen songs on this disc settle easily among the band's best work. Producer Rick Harte guides with an expert hand, integrating Hammond organ and pedal steel seamlessly into a full yet suitably unpolished whole, and the songs run the gamut from quieter but intense ballads like a definitive new “Common At Noon” and a sublime take on Jonathan Richman's “Fly Into The Mystery” to fast-paced rockers like “All Night Boppin'” (powered along by highly caffeinated barroom piano) and of course the instant classic title track, a high-energy gem anchored by the sort of classic Boston punk rock'n'roll riff that made this band's name. Culminating in an incendiary “Who Needs You?”, this is a genuine Real Kids record that will thrill new fans and old alike. Superbly mastered at New York's renowned Sterling Sound, the “Shake...Outta Control” LP was cut 100% analog direct from tape and pressed at RIP-V on 180G vinyl for an incredible high-quality deluxe package.

SHAVED WOMEN "Just Death" LP (Makoul Records)
Shaved Women have finally decided to give the public what they've been frothing at the mouth for, a new full length record. Giving maladjusted hope to aspiring psychopaths everywhere, this fat slab is full of tasty jams. The distorted, buzz saw riffs make you want to carry around a knife, not a switchblade. The John Bonham meets the Incredible Hulk drums make you want you start a fight with a wall until you have less bones. The vocals drill into your head and convince you that they only way out is to slam through the ground tearing all of your friends designer blouses while failing through the wormhole. Simply put, this sounds like the tension of blood boiling after a car accident...if it was catchy.

 

AUSMUTEANTS "Order of Operation" LP (Goner Records)
Jake Robertson and Billy Gardner started Ausmuteants in late 2011 in Geelong, Australia, after having played since teenagers in trad garage bands (The Frowning Clouds and The Living Eyes, respectively). Per the norm for good-looking rebels who play by their own rules, they cracked the shits, broke loose with just a synth and drums and, in early 2012, knocked out the Split Personalities tape. The addition of Melbourne’s loose-unit Marc Dean on bass followed, and soon after, ex-Canberran hardcore non-guitarist Shaun Connor on guitar. Their second album Amusements (note: not self-titled) comes from this fledgling time as a full band, with a heavy dose of the duo’s songs. Since the runaway international success of that record and playing every second weekend in Melbourne, they’re rocked-out full-tilt with all four members writing and singing new songs—23 of which were recorded live with vocal overdubs in the basement of an old ice cream factory by Mikey Young, then mixed and mastered in his idyllic coastal abode. Again the band and their Australian label Aarght! Records strained the friendship with song picks, agreeing on thirteen to make up Order of Operation. This record is better than Amusements any way you cut it: songs, lyrics, delivery and sound. It opens with Connor’s forehead- and thigh-slapping musical and lyrical debut, “Freedom of Information.” From there, songs range from balls-to-the-wall punkers (“Felix Tried to Kill Himself”; “Boiling Point”), well-considered workouts (“Family Time”; “Tunnel Vision”) and unguarded tenderness (“Wrong”; “Looney Bin”). Even people who couldn’t stand their earlier juvenile bullshit are now onboard. The toilet humor has been ditched, the band has gotten nasty and written songs about other people’s problems, terrible bands, fighting crime and trading sex for porn. Young was heard to say after one particular vocal take: “You deserve to be bashed for that.” The song’s on the record; you guess which one. Order of Operation is now their defining moment. If you don’t like this record, you pretty much won’t ever like Ausmuteants.

 

AUSMUTEANTS "S/T" LP (Goner Records)
Ausmuteants are four twenty-nothings from Geelong, Victoria, raised on a diet of seminal avant punk like Chrome and the Screamers. Letʼs not mention Devo—as a two-piece, Jake Robertson (synth, guitar) and Billy Gardener (drums) flushed that obsession with the release of their Split Personalities album in 2012. They’ve since added Marc Dean and Shaun Connor on bass and guitar, respectively, and worked ’60s songwriting ideas, disco rhythms and a subtler brand of theft into finely crafted pop songs, recording 22 in early 2013. Aarght! Records picked the best twelve for Amusements, reissued on vinyl domestically by Goner. Ausmuteants are liked by Vice and Dangerfield despite (or because of) their synthesizers, their swearing and their youthful good looks. For what it’s worth, Ausmuteants do not like Vice or Dangerfield.

Athens, GA. based alternative love child born to Ella Kaspar and Lenny Miller by way of Vancouver, Canada & NYC. Ex-members of UNFUN & DEAD DOG. Debut album, "Fatten The Leeches" produced & recorded by Seattle's, Jack Endino (Nirvana- “Bleach”, Hole, Babes in Toyland, Soundgarden) Comes w/ download.

BEACH SLANG "Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?" 7" (Dead Broke Records)
Their debut EP, Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken?, is not only the perfect record to kick off sixty-degree weather, it’s the perfect record to kick off sixty-degree weather now, after six months of freezing temperatures on the East Coast. It’s also got the kind of genuine nostalgia that can only be achieved by having a combined fifty or so years spent in punk rock among three members, and when guitarist James Snyder growls, “This guitar wants to die” in raggedy, torn, pissed off vocals that are equal parts Robby Takac and Paul Westerberg, it’s all I can do to stop myself from getting these lyrics plastered all over my body. And whereas Snyder’s band Weston defined being an awkward teenager in the 90s, Beach Slang catches up with that same goofy kid at forty, stoked as ever on punk rock and loud, brash guitars.

NONA / CROW BAIT Split 7" (Dead Broke Records)
Long overdue Split 7" between these two East Coast bands. NONA hails from Pennsylvania and jam out here with two killer tracks of pop-punk soaked indie rock. (Ex- Spraynard). Crow Bait is from Long Island & cranks out two alternative-rock melodic punk songs. (Members of: Iron Chic, Sister Kisser & more). Digital download includes bonus acoustic song from each.

PRINCE "S/T (II)" 7" (Dead Broke Records)
Snotty and melodic-as-fuck pop-punk from the blazing streets of Austin, TX! Members of Huff Stuff Magazine, Dude Jams!, Capitalist Kids, Wild America & more rage on with their upbeat & unique blend of lo-fi garage slop-pop-punk. Get on it cus this is totally ruling it.

MURMURS "Bound" LP (Dead Broke Records)
Seattle, Washington's kings of crusty pop-punk are back with their first official full-length album. Last year saw the vinyl release of the bands' debut batch of songs titled, "Fly With The Unkindness". Well, Murmurs are back and are here to kick the goddamn door in with, "Bound". Drawing from earlier pop-punk influences (ranging from the East Bay to the Northwest), the band pushes further on with their dark, urgent & poppy melodic tones. All while churning it up with a chunk of fuzzed-out grunge rock, this time around. If you weren't a believer before, then you will be now. An outstanding effort & one of our favorite records of the year, straight up. (Members of: Snuggle, Pipsqueak, No Hi-Fives To Bullshit, Transient & more.)

EX-CULT "S/T" LP (Goner Records)
Hey bro, check it out: In Memphis in early 2011, five people joined forces to start a punk rock band. They each came from different scenes—hardcore, psychedelic, and various flavors of indie pop. Things gelled. I mean, really came together, man! Following the release of two killer singles under the name Sex Cult, they were faced with a lawsuit from a similarly named and very aggressive techno label in New York City. So Sex Cult became Ex-Cult.  Playing a series of house parties and gigs in dive bars, Ex-Cult honed their sound—a punk rock sweet spot that incorporates angular post-punk, flying saucer fuzz guitar, snotty vocals and bash-your-head-in energy. A real stone groove! Killer linear punk à la Wire, Urinals, Australia’s X or something, man!  A show at SXSW caught the attention of indie wonderkind Ty Segall, and the two began making plans to record in San Francisco. This is the end result—a debut album that takes the living energy of their show and crams it onto the grooves of an LP. Wild, man! Wild!

WIDOWS WATCH "This Message Repeats" LP (Toxic Pop Records)
Maryland is full of "best kept secret" bands. You know, the kind that quietly write music in their basements and garages, record with their friends, play shows once in a while, and maybe even get to open for their favorite bands from time to time, yet due to jobs, families, and other obligations they are rarely, if ever, able to hit the road and take their music to people that live even just a few hours down the highway. Widows Watch are one of those bands. If you're from the Baltimore area, you may fondly remember bands like Can't Say and Greasegun and their Leatherface/All/Big Drill Car/Doughboys/Sugar worship. Well, Widows Watch is made up of most of those same people (and rounded out with members of Chernobyl Kids and the Gamma Rays) and they still love the same bands. These are songs for people who still believe in the power of music to connect those of us that don't sit quietly while those in charge strip away everything that we hold dear. Earnest songs about the beauty in giving a shit and the ugliness in keeping your mouth shut. Honest songs about the struggles of living with anxiety and depression, and eager songs about sticking it out with your friends and your loved ones by your side. This is their debut LP and if you're lucky it will be the first of many. If you're even luckier you may get a chance to see them play your town. Fingers crossed.

MDC "Millions of Dead Cops (Millenium Edition)" LP (Beer City Records)
LP -‘Millions of Dead Cops’ is the first iconic , full length; classic must have record by M.D.C. This was first released in 1981 and quickly became an overnight sensation. Not only did M.D.C. deliver a record full of fast intense music , but this record would influence 1000’s of hardcore/punk and bands of political nature to this day. The corruption of cops! Greed of corporations! Racism! The fact that not all people were the same , but so what that’s OK! Are all addressed in this groundbreaking LP. Many of these issues were quit taboo at the time and had not been addressed to this degree in punk before. Round it all off with this being fully restored and re mastered with the original mix. You have a definite must have album!

FANG "Landshark" LP (Boner Records)
The classic 1983 hardcore scuzz rock debut from Berkeley, CA’s Fang, Landshark is a unique mix of erratic thrashers and slow Sabbath-oid noise riffs. Its best-known tune is without a doubt the rumbling and stumbling opening track “The Money Will Roll Right In,” which has been covered by Nirvana, Metallica, Mudhoney, The Butthole Surfers and god knows who else. The record also includes cheerful odes to the disabled (“Destroy the Handicapped”), the follicle-y challenged (“Skinheads Smoke Dope”), and assorted werewolves, delinquents and drug users. Fang continues to unload their brand of sludge-punk on audiences to this day, with recent tours taking them around the US, Europe and Brazil. This reissue is remastered and back in print on vinyl for the first time in 20 years, with additional vintage artwork inside. The digital download included with the disc also features their entire Where the Wild Things Are release, plus more.

ADICTS, THE "Sound of Music" LP (Taang Records)
This is the 1982 classic LP from UK punks The Adicts, who deliver thirteen tracks of tough, rocking punk, delivered with catchy hooks and sing-along choruses.

SLAUGHTER AND THE DOGS "Do It Dog Style" LP (Taang Records)
Do It Dog Style is the 1978 debut LP from classic UK punk band Slaughter And The Dogs who formed all the way back in 1976. After opening for the Sex Pistols that same year, the band released two classic singles and eventually this 12" that mixed early punk and glam delivered with the same fire and tongue-in-cheek attitude as other timeless UK acts.

SIN 34 "Do You Feel Safe" LP (Sinister Torch Records)
NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Formed in the first wave haze of LA punk rock, SIN 34 epitomizes the Southern California Hardcore scene at the time. Fast, defiant thrash, one part suburban teenage rebellion, one part crass satire, all held together by a thread of reckless adventuring. One of the rare hardcore bands fronted by a female singer, SIN 34 bounced it’s way briefly but not quietly through the SoCal scene, dodging flying bodies, and antagonistic, aggressive LA police as they went. Originally released in 1983, Do You Feel Safe? (SIN 34’s only full length LP), captured the band in their short-lived prime. 30-plus years out of print until now, JULIE, DAVE, PHIL and MIKE encapsulate the youthful spirit of a vital and influential music movement. Includes liner notes by band member DAVE MARKEY (We Got Power zine). Remastered by BOB WESTON. GUN CLUB, THE "Death Party" LP (Sympathy for the Record Industry)
Part of a reissue campaign to reintroduce this criminally overlooked, seminal Los Angeles punk band. Released in 1983, these are the only recordings of this version of the band following a line up shakeup. In addition to the tracks from Death Party are 7 songs from a live radio broadcast from Geneva, Switzerland in March, 1983.

GUN CLUB, THE "Las Vegas Story" LP (Sympathy for the Record Industry)
Part of a reissue campaign to reintroduce this criminally overlooked, seminal Los Angeles punk band. Although Pierce would reform and reignite the Gun Club up until his death, this release from 1984 marked the end of the original era. Including peculiar choices for covers by Pharoah Sanders and Gershwin, Las Vegas Story begins with a Bo Diddley drum beat and continues through a pastiche of styles and storylines that encapsulate the warped ideals of middle America.

GUN CLUB, THE "Miami" LP (Sympathy for the Record Industry)
The sophomore record by the Gun Club bore the curse of having to follow a monolith of their own making. Fire of Love sold extremely well for an independent; it was a favorite of virtually every critic who heard it in 1981. Miami showcased a different lineup as well. Ward Dotson replaced Congo Powers (temporarily, at least) on guitar, and there were a ton of guest performances, including Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Stein produced the album. Off the bat the disc suffers from a thin mix. Going for a rougher sound, Stein left the instruments at one level and boosted Pierce's vocal. There is plenty of guitar here, screaming and moping like a drunken orphan from the Texas flatlands, but next to its predecessor it sounds drier and reedier. Ultimately it hardly matters. Going for a higher, more desolate sound, frontman and slide player Jeffrey Lee Pierce and his band were literally on fire. The songs here, from "Carry Home,""Like Calling Up Thunder,""Devil in the Woods,""Watermelon Man,""Bad Indian," and "Texas Serenade," among others, centered themselves on a mutant form of country music that met the post-punk ethos in the desert, fought and bloodied each other, and decided to stay together. This is hardcore snake-charming music (as in water moccasins not cobras), evil, smoky, brash, and libidinally uttered. Their spooky version of an already creepy tune by Creedence Clearwater Revival, "Run Through the Jungle" runs the gamut from sexual nightmare to voodoo ritual gone awry. Finally, Pierce and company pull out all the roots and reveal them for what they are: "John Hardy," is a squalling punk-blues, with the heart of the country in cardiac arrest. Dotson proved to be a fine replacement for Congo Powers, in that his style was pure Telecaster country (à la James Burton) revved by the Rolling Stones and Johnny Thunders. Miami was given a rough go when it was issued for its production. But in the bird's-eye view of history its songs stack up, track for track, with Fire of Love and continue to echo well into this long good night.

Two songs by St. Louis’ Cal and the Calories. This cassette features a new original song, Plop, as well as cover of BobbyDarin’s 1950s smash hit “Splish Splash.” Represses are limited to a run of 50 yellow tapes with yellow j-cards. Art by Brian Galecki.

NECTAR "S/T" Tape (Rat King Records)
Four song demo from Champaign based Kamila Glowacki. Glowacki really brands herself as a way of sweet but deceptive twee music in the vein of Tiger Trap and Cub.  This demo features her deep loathing as well as the blissfully sweet taste of love. Repress limited to 30 with hand cut o-cards.

TEEN FREAK "S/T" Tape (Rat King Records)
Debut Demo from Springfield IL’s Teen Freak. This foul demo shows what it is to truly be different from everyone else that you are surrounded by. Lyrics written by a troubled teen, music flowing out of gutters like day-old slime. Repress is limited to 35 cassettes with double o-cards (how freaky).

CANADIAN RIFLE "Deep Ends" Tape (Dead Broke Records)
Cassette tape version of Canadian Rifle's amazing new album. "Deep Ends is the second LP from Canadian Rifle, arguably Chicago’s best melodic hardcore band. The band plays confessional punk with brash vocals (reminiscent of Leatherface and early Jawebreaker) with themes that range from crossing lines when you know you shouldn’t, trying to keep something alive when you’re running on empty, as well as struggles with addiction. Needless to say, it’s pretty bleak in its lyrical and musical approach, but played with an angered energy that’ll keep you fist pumping for the duration. Pretty fucking great for a band with no dreams and no goals."

    "Tenement mopped the floor with conventional showmanship the second they walked in the door. With their eyes closed and their heads tilted toward the heavens, they've been known to stand still in the spotlight and let their glorious noise ring out, naked and uninhibited. This isn't a hateful noise, but it is a sincere one that if received by a perceptive audience, can tug at the gut and induce a primal shiver from the mind to the heart. Perhaps this honesty can be attributed to their Midwestern stereotype, or perhaps they are in fact true outsiders among their Rock and Roll peers. No matter which, the curiosity that is Tenement began in 2006 with a series of loose demo recordings and singles that married the genres of "Pop" and "Punk" without being explicitly "Pop Punk" and to many, represented the power and urgency of Hardcore without actually conforming to the genre itself. These recordings have been compiled here by Grave Mistake Records and Toxic Pop Records for their new collection LP, Bruised Music, Volume One, which covers Tenement's output on record between the years 2006 to 2009.

    The influence of 80's punk is strong in the bulk of the material on Bruised Music, likening the feeling of The Descendents or The Replacements. However, this comparison might seem lazy when you keep in mind that the members of Tenement had long schooled themselves on everything from The Beatles to Big Star, Sun Ra, Coltrane, Black Flag, Husker Du. Obscure hardcore punk to Brill Building pop music and all points in between. The period of time represented in this collection is a period of growing pains that paved the way for them to become the band that they are today, and the band that they will be many years from now. It's the birth of a strong creative force; the musicians together learning to crawl, and the great American outsider pop group taking its first steps. Grace and elegance go out the window on this one. It's clumsy and ugly at times. Its breath stinks and its pimples show. It talks loudly in a quiet room. It speaks its mind and spares no sensitivity. It's Tenement's Bruised Music."

Bruised Music Volume One will feature Tenement's earliest material, compiling a total of ten tracks taken from the Tenement Sucks tape, Dead Broke and Dirt Cult Records mixtape compilations, split w/ Used Kids, split w/ Friendly Fire, False Teeth 7", and Icepick 7".  All of the material has been remastered by Daniel Husayn at North London Bomb Factory for one cohesive and superb sounding anthology.

You can hear the remastered version of the song "Spaghetti Midwestern" streaming over at IMPOSE now alongside a quick interview about the release.

It's an honor for us to be able to get all of this early material back into print and in one place (including the first vinyl appearance for a handful of these songs), and we hope that this release will find its way into the ears of many more people who will enjoy and appreciate the formative years of a prolific, captivating, and truly inspiring band. 

Bruised Music Volume One is a split release with the wonderful Toxic Pop Records, and the record will be available for preorder the second week in Februrary.

This year is shaping up to be quite a productive and momentous year for Tenement, and we couldn't be more thrilled to get the ball rolling with this retrospective release.

Last year, Washington DC's RED DEATH came out of the gate and obliterated everyone with one of the best hardcore demos of 2014. Their first recorded output channeled the sheer brutality and precision of crossover classics like Animosity, Cause for Alarm, and Best Wishes, without straying too far from the rawness and reckless abandon of hardcore punk. With their debut LP on the horizon (much more info on that in the coming months) and a decent amount of tour plans for 2015, it made perfect sense to get those demo tracks onto the 7" format where they arguably should have been in the first place.

We have yet another track from the upcoming singles collection LP from Wisconsin's TENEMENT, "MorningMouth," streaming over on Stereogum now. Morning Mouth originally appeared on the FalseTeeth 7", and it has been remastered and compiled with nine more early, out of print Tenement tracks on the BruisedMusicVolumeOne LP collection, which will be out on March 10th on Grave Mistake and Toxic Pop Records.

Morning Mouth is the third track we have put up from this collection, and you can give "SpaghettiMidwestern" and "The Fire is Out"a listen as well if you haven't yet.

Tenement have just begun a several week East Coast tour with Don Giovanni Records artists PRIESTS and VACATION, and you can check out those dates below. The band will have copies of the BruisedMusic LP with them on this tour, and we currently have the LP up for preorder through both Grave Mistake and Toxic Pop.

Preorders will begin shipping next week, and keep your eyes peeled for a full album stream coming up next week as well.
